Game 3 Preview

Game 3 of the World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox moved to Dodger Stadium in L.A. with Boston up 2-0 on the Dodgers in the Series.

 Game 3 starters

The starters for game 3 were Rick Porcello for the visiting Red Sox and Walker Buehler for the hometown Dodgers.  Rick Porcello pitched 4.2 innings against the Dodgers giving up just 1 run on 4 hits to L.A.  His counterpart, the young star Walker Buehler, was making his 1st. career World Series start.  He did not disappoint.  Buehler threw 7.0 inning of scoreless ball.  Buehler gave up no runs, no walks and only 2 hits to the Red Sox in game 3.

 Game 3 scoring

There was not a lot of scoring in game three between these two clubs.  However, the Dodgers would strike first in the third inning on a 2 out solo homerun from their left fielder Joc Peterson giving the Dodgers an early 1-0 lead.

That slim lead would hold up for the Dodgers all the way until the top of the 8th inning.  In the top of the 8th with the Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen on to try to get the 6 out save Jackie Bradley Jr. stepped up to the plate.  With 2 outs Bradley Jr. got a “back door” cutter from Janson and hit a towering fly ball home run into the right field bleachers, giving Boston their first run of the contest and tying the game up at 1.

The game would remain tied until the top of the 13th inning when Boston added another run.  In the top of the 13th inning with a runner on third base Eduardo Nunez hit a soft bouncer back to the pitcher Scott Alexander.  Alexander would make a throwing error to first base allowing Brock Holt to score from third giving Boston their first lead of the night 2-1.

However, L.A. would respond with a run of their own in the bottom half of the 13th.   In the bottom half of the inning Yasial Puig would step up the plate with a runner on second.  Puig hit a sharp ground ball to Boston’s second baseman Ian Kinsler.  Kinsler would lose his footing a little on the play, making him lose his balance and “airmail” the throw to first and allowing Max Muncy to score from second base, tying the game again at 1.

Then it was the battle of the bullpens for both teams for the next five innings.  The Dodgers used many different arms out of their bullpen to get to the 18th inning.  For Boston they only needed one man, and that man was Nathan Eovaldi.  Eovaldi came into the game in the bottom of the 13th.  Eovaldi, usually a starter, came in the game in relief for Boston.  Eovaldi threw 4 scoreless innings for Boston.

A Hollywood Ending

However, L.A. would get the last laugh.  In the bottom of the 18th inning their first baseman Max Muncy would step up to the plate.  Muncy would hit a high and outside cutter from Eovaldi and send it into the left field bleachers and send the Dodgers and their fans home with a game three win.
