During this past spring there were rumors of Dakota high school beginning a lacrosse team. Why would the biggest school in Michigan not even have a lacrosse team, this sport is pretty popular? The rumors were true, Dakota shocked the world by starting up a lacrosse team. This is the first ever lacrosse team. I was fortunate and got to play on the first ever team. It was an awesome experience. I’ve played lacrosse since I was young so my high school finally having was a great opportunity to get our names out in the world. Our first game was against Grosse Pointe South. They had a big and good team and since it was our first game we all knew it wasn’t going to go so well.
The Dakota JV team lost 14-2 but we were surprised that we even got two goals. So JV thought we did better then varsity but we understand that Varsity is playing better, bigger, and scary teams. The score for the Varsity lacrosse team was 16-0. But still the Varsity team came out of that game with their heads up high. They went to the locker room after and they turned up the speakers and jammed out to some music. After the game the Grosse Pointe South coach was interviewed by Macomb Daily, noting “What they lack in talent, they definitely made up for their effort, their desire and their heart.” Dakota lacrosse did not end up with a good record neither Varsity nor JV. We had fun playing and meeting the new kids on the team. We did not end up having tryouts next year because not to many kids wanted to play. So this year we are looking for a good year with all the new kids joining.
