Upset at the Crisler Center

On February 24th, 2019 the Michigan State basketball team traveled to Ann Arbor to continue the rivalry series with their cross state rival Michigan. Headed into the matchup the Wolverines were tanked number 7 in the AP poll and the Spartans were also ranked 10th. This game was long awaited because of the impressive records of both teams, but key injuries to two of MSU’s best three players led to Michigan becoming a heavy favorite.

The first half was filled with lead changes as both squads hit shots when needed and applied pressure on the defensive end. Kenny Goins provided some key points as MSU looked for a player to step up with big man, Nick Ward injured. Michigan answered with steady production from veterans Zavier Simpson and Jon Teske and went into half time with a 39 – 37 lead. The pressure was on for the higher ranked Wolverines to defend their home winning streak of 22 games, against a rival dealing with injuries. The second half would be owned by Michigan State point guard Cassius Winston, as his timely assists and knock down jumpers gave the Spartans a lead they would not relinquish. Michigan’s freshman sensation Ignas Brazdeikis and shooting marksman Jordan Poole would be unsuccessful in their comeback effort and Tom Izzo’s team would pull off the upset. The score would end 77-70 as Winston provided 27 points and 8 assists in the Spartans’ victory. Matt McQuaid also played excellent totaling 13 points and hitting two clutch three pointers in pivotal moments during the game.

The teams face off again in East Lansing on March 9th and could very well play a third time in the Big Ten Tournament. Both teams have a lot to play for and could be successful in the NCAA tournament as Michigan hopes for a return to the national championship game and Tom Izzo expects to add another final four appearance to his resumé.
