Monday Night Madness
On Monday Night Football, the 9-1 Chiefs headed to Los Angeles to play the 9-1 Rams. This highly anticipated matchup was set to play the NFL’s annual game in Mexico City but poor field conditions forced the game to be moved to LA. Both offenses were expected to perform well and they did not disappoint.
Jared Goff started the game blazing hot, passing for two touchdowns on the Rams’ first two drives. Rookie phenom QB, Patrick Mahomes, would continue his historic season, passing for three first half touchdowns. The third, was an eight yard completion to Chris Conley tying the game at 23 points a piece going into the break.
Scoring would heat up once again in the fourth quarter starting with a 73 yard TD reception by Tyreke Hill bringing the Chiefs within three. This quarter alone had four lead changes, including a Chiefs touchdown by Conley with 2:47 remaining and a 40 yard TD catch by Gerald Everett to help the Rams retake the lead with 1:49 remaining. After a surprising Mahomes interception, the Rams got the ball back but after a needed defensive stop, the Chiefs had one last opportunity to put points on the board. With time ticking and no timeouts Mahomes was once again trying to get the Chiefs in scoring position but was picked off by Lamarcus Joyner. The Los Angeles Rams would come out victorious with a final score of 54-51.
Although this game will be remembered for the offensive dominance both defenses played exceptional totaling 7 turnovers. The Chiefs’ Allen Bailey accounted for one sack, two fumble recoveries and a touchdown. Samson Ebukam also had himself a day for the Rams totaling one sack, and one fumble recovery and interception returned for touchdowns.
This matchup totaled 105 points, becoming the highest scoring game in Monday Nigh Football history (773 games) and the only game to have both teams score 50 points or more. This will be a game to remember for both young franchise quarterbacks as Jared Goff threw for 413 yards and totaled 5 touchdowns, while Patrick Mahomes threw for a career high 478 yards and 6 touchdowns. Both teams will look to make deep playoff runs and a rematch in the Super Bowl would be another game for the ages.
