The National League Series Division Recap

Brewers celebrate NLDS sweep

The second National League Division series consisted of the Colorado Rockies and the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Brewers found their way into the NLDS by beating the Chicago Cubs, at Wrigley Field, in the tie-breaker game 163.  They beat the Cubs by the score of 3-1 on October 1st   behind their ace Jhoulys Chacin who pitched five and two-thirds innings getting the no-decision.

The Rockies on the other-hand has a much harder rode to the NLDS.  The Rockies had to travel to Los Angeles to take on the Dodgers in another game 163.  The Rockies ended up losing that game by the score of 5-2 and lost the chance of winning their first N.L. west title in franchise history.  Their next stop was Chicago to play the Cubs at Wrigley Field for the National League Wild Card Game.  The Rockies ended up winning the game by the score of 2-1 in 13 inning and their reliver Scott Oberg earned the win.

GAME1

Game one of the NLDS was played in Milwaukee at Miller Park home of the Brewers.  The Brewers started their 6’4”/215lb right-hander Brandon Woodruff, who pitched three innings.  The Rockies started their 23-year-old 6’1/180 right-hander Antonio Senzatela, who pitched 5 innings in that game.

The Brewers got the first tally of the game with two runs coming in the second inning by the likely National League MVP Christian Yelich, who hit a two-run homerun into center field that scored his teammate Lorenzo Cain.

The Rockies were held scoreless until the top of the 9th inning when their center fielder Charlie Blackman, singled on a hard groundball into right field that scored Gerardo Parra.  A couple plays later the Rockies all-star third baseman Nolan Arenado hit a sacrifice fly into center field that scored the pinch-runner Garrett Hampson from third and tied the game up at 2.

The game was only tied until the bottom of the 10th inning when the Brewers third baseman Mike Moustakas stepped up to the plate with runners on first and third with two outs in the inning.  Moustakas singled on a 0-2 pitch into right field to win the game for the Brewers.

GAME 2

The two starting pitchers for Game two of the NLDS between the Rockies and Brewers consisted of Tyler Anderson for the Rockies and Jhoulys Chacin for the Brewers.  Tyler Anderson is a 6’4”/210lb “Southpaw” who had a record of 7-9 in the regular season, with a 3.86 ERA.  Jhoulys Chacin on the other hand is a 6’3”/215lb right-hander who had a 15-8 record this season with a 3.50 ERA to go along with it.

Chacin and Anderson were neck-and-neck through the first four innings of the game. Neither one of the men gave up a run through the first four innings.  Chacin went 5.0 innings with only allowing three hits and did not allow any earned runs.  His counterpart, Tyler Anderson, went one more inning than Chacin pitching 6.0 innings and four hits on one earned run.

Milwaukee got the first run of the contest by a ground-rule double into center field by their right fielder Hernan Perez.  Later in the 8th the Brewers would tack on four more runs.  Mike Moustakas ground a ball into right field for another RBI for the “crew,” making it a 2-0 Brewer lead.  Three batters later the 38-year-old catcher Erik Kratz stepped up with the bases loaded and hit a broken bat single into left field that scored two more insurance runs for Milwaukee and wrapped up the game for the Brewers.

GAME 3

Game three of the series moved to Colorado and was played a Coors Field home of the Colorado Rockies.  The Rockies started their 23-year-old 6’1”/185lb right hander German Marquez who pitched 5.0 innings and gave up seven hits and two earned runs in his outing agents the Brewers.  The Brewers on the other hand took a very different approach in that game which is called “bullpening.” “Bullpening” is where a team throws out sever different pitchers from the bullpen to get several outs.   The Brewers started their veteran Wade Miley who pitched 42/3 innings and not allowing any runs.  The Brewers brought in their reliver Corey Knebel who only got one out in the game. They also brought in Joakim Soria, Jeremy Jeffress, Josh Hader and Corbin Burns.

The game was not all just good pitching.  There was a lot of scoring and homeruns in that game as well but, it all came from the Brewers.  Jesus Aguilar hit the first homerun in the contest that went into the left field bleachers that gave the Brewers a 2-0 lead at the time.  Five innings later in the 9th the Brewers hit back-to-back homeruns.  The first homerun in the 9th was hit by Orlando Arcia to left field.  The second homerun in the 9th was hit by the Brewers young outfielder Keon Broxton.  He hit it deep into the bullpen.

Then in the bottom of the ninth Jeremy Jeffress came on to wrap up the game and the series by having Rockies Ian Desmond fly out to the right fielder Lorenzo Cain.  Now the will be moving on to the National League Championship series (NLCS).
