Recapping NHL Trade Deadline 2018
With the NHL Trade Deadline come and gone, here are biggest trades that went down on the day of this year’s deadline, February 26th.
Before the Deadline
Players dealt before the deadline day include, with new team in parenthesis: F Mark Letestu (CBJ), F Tomas Plekanec (TOR), F Rick Nash (BOS), F Derick Brassard (PIT), F Michael Grabner (NJ), F Tobias Rieder (LAK), D Nick Holden (BOS), G Petr Mrazek (PHI), and D Dion Phaneuf (LAK).
Day of the Deadline
To OTT: F Nick Moutrey, 2020 3rd Round Pick
The Blue Jackets get depth at defense for a playoff push, and playoff experience as Ian Cole has been part of the back to back Cup winning Penguins team.
To NSH: F Ryan Hartman, 2018 5th Round Pick
To CHI: 2018 1st Round Pick, F Victor Ejdsell, 2018 4th Round Pick
One of the more surprising moves of the day, as Nashville acquires Hartman for a 1st rounder. Many believe they overpaid and that there were better deals to be had, but time will tell on if the deal worked out.
To STL: 2018 1st Round Pick, F Erik Foley, Conditional 2020 4th Round Pick
After losing 6 straight, the Blues decided to go into sell mode and trade away Stastny for a player and a pick. For Winnipeg, they get another point producer to go along with Laine, Scheifele, and Wheeler as they chase top spot in the Central Division.
To BUF: Conditional 2019 1st Round Pick, Conditional 2020 4th Round Pick, F Danny O’Regan
Kane joins the Sharks looking to make a good impression on the team so he can finally find a home after being moved twice in just a few seasons.
To VAN: F Jussi Jokinen, F Tyler Motte
Vanek moves on deadline day for the second straight season, and Columbus will look to him for scoring help.
To DET: 2018 1st Round Pick, 2019 2nd Round Pick, 2021 3rd Round Pick
After failing to get Erik Karlsson at the deadline, Vegas goes and gets Tatar from Detroit. For the Red Wings, they get rid of all the salary ( 3 yrs at $5.3 mil) on Tatar and now have the most draft picks in the upcoming 2018 NHL Draft.
To TB: D Ryan McDonagh, F JT Miller
To NYR: F Vladislav Namesnikov, 2018 1st Round Pick, Conditional 2019 2nd Round Pick, F Brett Howden, D Libor Hajek
The biggest trade of the afternoon ends with Rangers captain McDonagh going to Tampa. The Lightning were regarded as a front runner during the day and now has a top defenseman in a quest for a Stanley Cup.
To EDM: F JD Dudek, 2019 3rd Round Pick
In what may have been the most under the radar move of the day, the Devils land Maroon from Edmonton. The team looks to be the surprise team of the playoffs in April.
Players Who Did Not Move
D Erik Karlsson (OTT), D Mike Green (DET), F Max Pacioretty (MTL), F Bobby Ryan (OTT), and F Mats Zuccarello (NYR), G Robin Lehner (BUF), Jack Johnson (CBJ), were among some players who did not get traded before the deadline, and thus will stay with their current teams until the end of the season.
