Super Bowl LII Recap
Super Bowl LII was a game to remember. The Philadelphia Eagles took on the New England Patriots in an enticing matchup. Philadelphia, coming in under two underdog playoff wins. They won with backup QB Nick Foles after losing starting QB Carson Wentz to injury. Though their playoffs hopes were low at first, the Eagles were looking for their first championship win. On the side of the field, the Patriots were looking for a back-to-back championship win and sixth championship under head coach Bill Billichick and MVP QB Tom Brady.
In the first quarter, the two teams both started by kicking field goals after solid starts to their respective drives. The Eagles then struck with the first touchdown of the game, where Nick Foles threw a 34-yard TD pass to WR Alshon Jeffery, but missed the extra point, to lead 9-3
In the second quarter, the action intensified. The quarter started out with a missed field goal by the Patriots. After the Eagles went three and out on their next drive, Tom Brady let a possible touchdown and definite first down trick play pass slip through his fingers. This led to an Eagles 21-yard TD run by LeGarrette Blount to put the Eagles up 15-3. New England responded to this with a field goal and a rushing TD of their own on the next two drives. Philadelphia then ended the half with a trick play named “Philadelphia Special”, where the Eagles TE threw to QB Nick Foles in the end zone for a 1-yard TD.
After halftime, New England struck with a TD to pull within three. However, the Eagles first drive of the half with a controversial TD catch by Corey Clement. It was a tough call for the refs, as the ball may have hit the ground while Clement was going to the ground, but it put the Eagles up 29-19. The Patriots then responded with a TD of their own to make it 29-26
In the fourth quarter, the Eagles struck with a field goal to put them up by 6. The Patriots responded with a passing TD to TE Rob Gronkowski to put New England up 33-32. In response, Philadelphia went on a long drive that resulted in a TD pass from Foles to TE Zack Ertz to put them up 38-33 with 2:25 to go. With a chance to drive down the field and win the game, Tom Brady fumbled, which led to an Eagles field goal that sealed a 41-33 win. Eagles QB Nick Foles took home MVP honors.
