Tua Coming in Clutch
On the night of January 8th 2018, the College Football National championship was going on. It was the Alabama Rolling Tide vs. the Georgia Bulldogs. Alabama wanted to bounce back from losing to the Clemson Tigers just the year before, whereas it was Georgia’s first time in possibly winning the national championship since 1980.
With winning on their mind, Georgia wanted to come out with a bang and win this game. The Bulldogs did come out with a bang. They had a lead of 13-0 at halftime. Georgia wanted to keep the momentum going by coming out of half scoring seven more points, which then made the score 20-0. Without thought, Roll Tide did something that no one would’ve ever seen coming. They brought in their true freshman quad quarterback to bring their team to victory.
They took out quarterback Jalen Hurts to bring in Tua Tagovailoa. All pressure of winning was pushed onto him, starting one of his biggest games ever in a national championship. His first drive ended in a punt which everyone thought would happen. Shockingly, whithin the next couple of drives he came back and powered through, and tied the game 20-20.
At the end of the fourth quarter, the teams were still tied. They went into overtime with a score of 20-20. Georgia kicked a field goal which brought their lead up 23-20. Alabama was quick to strike back though, with Tagovailoa throwing a 42-yard touchdown pass in overtime to take the win away from the Bulldogs. Tua took Alabama to its 7th national championship for coach Nick Saban. Tua threw 3 touchdown passes and 1 interceptions in the championship game. He had a great game for one of his 14 starts. Since he is only a freshman, he will have 3 more years to become even better, and even have a chance to go pro in the NFL.
