MLB 2017 Winter Meetings Recap
The 2017 MLB Winter Meetings were huge this year. There were so many free agent signings and huge trades around the league. This article will be an overview of all the big trades and signings during the Winter Meetings.
The first huge signing of the event was Shohei Ohtani, who signed with the Los Angeles Angels. Shohei Ohtani is a player from Japan who can hit and pitch very well. He played in Japan for five years. During those years, Ohtani hit for a .286 batting average, 166 RBIs and 48 homeruns. On the other side of the ball, as a pitcher, Ohtani’s win-loss record was 42-15, his ERA was a 2.52, and he struck out 624 batters over 543 innings. This is extremely rare in the MLB to have a player that can both pitch and hit very well.
Next, lets talk about the moves mad by the Miami Marlins during the meetings. The Marlins traded away the reigning MVP, Giancarlo Stanton, to the New York Yankees. Stanton, who hit 59 homeruns and 132 RBIs, will now be playing in one of the smallest ballparks in the whole MLB. Many people expect him to have an even better year than last year, his career best, at the plate. The Yankees will be the team to beat this year with the heart of there line up most likely including Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge, and Gary Sanchez.
The Marlins have also traded star outfielder Marcell Ozuna to the St. Louis Cardinals. Many people are questioning why the Marlins are trading away their stars. According to ESPN, Christian Yelich, an outfielder for the Miami Marlins, is “unhappy” with the Marlins’ actions during this offseason.
The 2017 Winter Meetings were crazy and these were only just some of the events that took place during the meetings. The offseason still has a lot more potential to be even crazier with big free agents like J.D. Martinez, Eric Hosmer, Wade Davis, Jake Arrieta, and Mike Moustakas.
