Homecoming has arrived, and the halls are filled with excitement and stress. Majority of students already have their outfits picked out, hopefully, but what about hair? Not everyone has the luxury or time to get their hair professionally done, but how can I make my hair look great for this special occasion? Planning to rock your natural hair to a special event can be extremely nerve wracking. “What should I do?”, “How can I achieve this look?”, or “How can I make it last?” Here are some suggestions to help you achieve that “eye-catching” look.
How to Gain the Most out of your Curls
There’s no denying that frizz is everyone’s worst enemy. Not only does it make your hair look dry and unhealthy, but it guarantees undefined volume. The best way to get greater definition and volume in your hair is not always the products you use, but the way and order you use them in. Let’s start with the basics, wet your hair, of course. Putting products in semi-wet hair will not only help the styling process but decrease your susceptibility to frizz. In other words, always wet your hair when styling.
For products, all you’re going to need is your preferred leave-in conditioner, a frizz control product (optional), mousse, and gel. (Side note: using a comb will help maintain length, and a brush will increase volume). Leave-in conditioners are pretty self-explanatory, so after you’re done with those, you will begin the ‘scrunching process’. Distribute the mousse of your choice throughout your hair with a comb, but before it mixes in, scrunch lightly and slowly. After that has taken the time to dry, grab a lightweight gel (Eco). With this, you will simply grab small portions into your hand, and scrunch into your hair.
When all your products are distributed within your hair, the drying process is optional. If you’re lazy like me, or simply don’t have the time, you can air-dry your hair and just go on with your day. On the other hand, however, you can use a diffuser in which you will dry the outside of your hair before your diffuser makes contact with your hair. This is so you can avoid adding frizz so that all prior steps aren’t for nothing. Once your hair is “crunchy” or dry, then you can use your diffuser on your roots for added volume, and slowly scrunch your hair for more definition. For airdrying, this process should only take around 20-25 minutes, depending on your diffuser, the diffusing method will take around 30-40 minutes. (All including the process of adding your hair products).
Styling Materials:
Knowing what you’re doing is one thing, an extremely important one thing at that, but knowing what to properly use to achieve your vision is just as important. Obviously, everyone operates differently, and like makeup, what works for someone may not work for another person and vice versa. Howeverrr, we will still cover this topic for informational purposes.
If you’re going for a slicked look, whether it’s for a high bun, low bun, ponytail, or whatever, a thick brush will be your best friend. As you’re pulling your hair back, use a regular brush to make sure you don’t have any bumps in your preferred slicked area, but afterwards, go in with a brush that is dense to make sure your hair is pressed down, and it stays down. One of the best examples of these types of brushes are boar bristled brushes. They do slightly hurt when you begin using them just because of their density, but you will adjust as time goes on and you will be thankful for this purchase. I recommend getting different sizes of these brushes for different portions of your head. You don’t want a big, full headed brush to do your edges, and you surely don’t want a tiny edge brush on your entire head. Another recommendation is to get a double-sided edge brush, where on one side is the brush part, and the other is a thin piece to part your hair with.
On the topic of edges, they are such a minor thing that can make or break your entire look
. They are an easy way to transform a basic ponytail, or slick back into an eye-catching design, and there’s so many ways to style them. Not to mention, edges are a way to tame/style your baby hairs that are too short to insert into your overall look.
For the girls with widows’ peaks, along with your other edges, styling your widows peak has a major impact on your hairstyle. It not only helps shape your face, but it prevents empty spaces to be left in-between your peak and other edges.
Importance?
Hair is such an important factor for many people, so why wouldn’t you want to make it look the best you possibly can? Many people connect with their hair and believe that it’s a big factor that contributes to who they are as a person, and whether that’s true or false, having the ability to represent yourself however you want is something you should always take advantage of.
