The Jimmy V Foundation

             V Foundation is cancer research founded by and ESPN and basketball coach Jim Valvano. Jim was born in 1946 and died of cancer in 1993, he was most famous for coaching at North Carolina State University. He played for Rutgers then went on to coach the Rutgers basketball team. He they coached at John Hopkins for a year, then to Connecticut for 2 more years. He also coached at Iona and Bucknell before his legendary season of NC State. With Nc State he gained 2 ACC regular season championships, 2 ACC tournament championships and one NCAA division 1 championship. Valvano is also famous for his speech given at the ESPY awards in 1993 while terminally ill from cancer. The Jimmy V Award is an award given at ESPY award show to a member of the sporting world who has overcome great obstacles. The motto “Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up”. He said those words almost two months before he died from adenocarcinoma.

            Jim Valvano was a very successful basketball coach but the reason he was remembered the way he was because he was caring, emotional, passionate, and legendary. He turned his own cancer journey into a legacy. He unfortunately died due to cancer but teamed up with ESPN to keep the foundation going. To this day the V Foundation has raised over $310 million to cancer research.
