Lions Thanksgiving Game Recap
Watching football on Thanksgiving is a tradition for
many in the city of Detroit, Michigan. The Detroit Lions took on the Minnesota Vikings this year in the annual turkey day game at Ford Field and was a big game for both teams.
The Lions led by the highest paid QB in the league, Matt Stafford, came into this game 6-4 and on a three-game winning streak after defeating the Green Bay Packers, Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears. The Lions were looking to inch forward in the division race against Minnesota. Minnesota led by their tough defense was coming in 8-2 and on a 6 game win streak.
The 1st quarter started with the Lions getting possession first and having to punt soon after. The Vikings then scored a touchdown on their first possession on a Case Keenum-Kyle Rudolph connection to make it 6-0. After the Lions fumbled the Vikings scored another TD on a Case Keenum 9-yard rush.
After a couple of empty possessions, the Lions got on the board with a Matt Prater field goal in the beginning of the 2nd quarter that cut the deficit to 13-3. Minnesota then proceeded to drive down the field only to have a 53-yard field goal blocked. After the Lions came away with nothing, Minnesota scored another touchdown on a 22-yard pass from Keenum to Rudolph to make it 20-3. The Lions than tied it before halftime with a 6-yard TD pass from Stafford to Marvin Jones.
The Vikings came out after halftime scoring a 2-yard rush TD by Latavius Murry to make it 27-10. Detroit kicked two field goals in the 3rd quarter to cut the deficit to 27-16. The 4th quarter began with Marvin Jones making a spectacular 43-yard TD catch to trim the lead to 27-23. That is as close as the Lions would get. After empty possessions by both teams, Stafford threw an interception to Vikings cornerback Xavier Rhodes to all but end the game. Even though the Lions blocked a field goal and returned it 77 yards for a TD, the play was called back due to an offsides penalty.
The game was a great competitive game with the Vikings taking the lead early and the Lions giving themselves a chance to fight back. Detroit goes to Baltimore to face the Ravens on Sunday while the Vikings travel to Atlanta to take on the Falcons.
