Michigan Wolverines Schedule, Predictions, and More
This season for the Michigan Wolverines has starting off amazing. They’ve started off their first six games with an undefeated record. The Wolverines have defeated Colorado State, Hawaii, UCONN, Maryland, Iowa, and Indiana with all high scoring wins. This week in the NCAA football rankings Michigan is ranked number 5 behind Clemson, Alabama, Ohio State, and Georgia. So far this season Michigan has had a light schedule with no teams really giving them a challenge besides Indiana. But coming up Michigan has a lot of tough games ahead of them.
The rest of this season Michigan will be facing Penn State, Michigan State, Rutgers, Nebraska, Illinois, and Ohio State. First, with Penn State ranked number ten they haven’t been doing too bad this season. With the game Saturday being at Michigan’s stadium it is more in Michigan’s favor considering Michigan is 8-3 against Penn State at the big house. And the last time Penn State beat Michigan with a packed stadium was 2009. Penn State could pull through, but this game looks to be Michigan’s.
Next up is one of the most popular games of Michigan’s season, Michigan vs Michigan State. Michigan State this season is 2-4 and on a 4-game losing streak. This game is going to be a really competitive one because Michigan State is not only looking to beat their rivals, but also end their losing streak. We see that Michigan is doing much better than state but in this rivalry game anything can happen. But from what we’ve seen so far this season, it looks like Michigan might take this game also.
Afterward, Michigan will be up against the Rutgers which are 3-3 this season. The Rutgers have given Michigan the game the past two seasons. The Rutgers are looking much better under Greg Schiano, but it doesn’t look like it could be enough to beat Michigan this season. Looking at the way both teams have played so far Michigan looks to win this game.
Up next for Michigan is playing 3-3 Nebraska. This looks like it could be a better game than people expect. Last year when Michigan and Nebraska went head-to-head Nebraska went into the game 3-9. People weren’t expecting it, but Nebraska brought Michigan down to the wire, but the Wolverines still took the victory. This game could go wither way, but it is still thought Michigan should take this victory also, but it won’t be easy.
Michigan’s final home game of the season will be against Illinois which is currently 5-1. Illinois is one of the three ranked teams that are remaining on Michigan’s schedule. This season Illinois has shown that they are no joke this season after last weekend with their win against Iowa. After watching this game, Illinois may cause some issues for Michigan’s offense. This game could go either way for these teams, but Michigan looks to be the favor in this game.
The Wolverines last game of the season is their biggest yet, Michigan vs Ohio State. One of the biggest games of the season for Michigan fans. Everyone in Michigan, including Michigan State fans root for the Wolverines in this game. This season Ohio State has looked unstoppable and lot of the votes for who are going to win this game are in Ohio states favor. Both teams are looking to go into this game undefeated. This game is also in Ohio States home field which could be difficult for Michigan. The predictions for this game are very split down the middle and it doesn’t look like the game will be a blow out, it will be close one for sure.
Moving on from the Wolverines schedule, lets look at one of Michigan’s most talked about subject this season which is their quarterback. Throughout the beginning of the season, Jim Harbaugh was switching between his two best quarterbacks Cade McNamara and JJ McCarthy to see who is going to be the starting quarterback. During the spring these two were supposed to compete but an injury to McCarthy’s throwing shoulder limited their ability to. Then it was decided Harbaugh was going to let it just play out. Many fans of Michigan have had different opinions on who should be the starting quarterback and it was very hard to choose because they both have pros but also cons. Starting with McNamara, he has had 15 starts including last year when Michigan beat Ohio State, won the big ten championship, and went on to the College football playoffs. In 2021, he completed 64% of his passes for 2,576 yards and 15 touchdowns according to ‘Mlive.com’. He has a good ability to limit turnovers and turn drives into points. While he has all of these skills he’s not exactly explosive with his arm. Deep throws were not common of Michigan’s offense under McNamara. He relied on short, quick passes. He isn’t exactly a runner either. Last season, he had 37 carries and 26 rushing yards. On to JJ McCarthy, it is obvious he has the stronger arm. He can complete his throws and make them consistent. This was shown in Week 1 of the 2021 season with his cross-field 69-yard touchdown to Daylen Baldwin. One of his bigger strengths is his mobility. He turned 27 carries into 124 yards and two touchdowns last season, averaging more than 4.6 yards per attempt. One of McCarthy’s cons are these high-risk passes can result in turnovers which he had 3 of last season. With McCarthy being so mobile it puts him at a threat of injury, especially with his previously injured shoulder. Jim Harbaugh has even acknowledged that he has pushed McCarthy to avoid too much contact. In the end, Jim Harbaugh went with the choice to make JJ McCarthy the starting quarterback for Michigan and many people were happy with his decision and also the results of his decision. This season McCarthy has been doing a great job at his position and fans are hoping he will keep it up until their game at Ohio State.
