Michigan vs. Michigan State
On Saturday October 7th, the 110th edition of one of the biggest in-state rivalries took place when MSU traveled to Ann Arbor to face the #7 ranked Michigan Wolverines. It was a fresh look for the rivalry as it was the first prime time matchup between the two and it was only the 4th game played under the lights at Michigan Stadium. Michigan came into the game with a 4-0 record (1-0 in big ten) and Michigan State came into the game with a 3-1 (1-0 in big ten) record.
On the first drive of the game, Michigan has the ball. They drove down all the way to the 11 yard line but failed to score a touchdown and were forced to kick a field goal. In a big rivalry like this one, missed points are never a good thing. Late in the first quarter, Michigan State quarterback, Brian Lewerke, ran for a 14 yard touchdown. After three straight punts, Michigan State had another impressive drive when they went 83 yards and scored another touchdown making the score 14-3 at halftime.
At the start of the third it started to rain. As the game went on the rain started falling harder and harder and this game became even more of a defensive battle, and an even sloppier game. After Michigan’s fullback Khalid Hill ran for a touchdown from a yard out halfway there were no more points scored in the game.
Michigan State upset Michigan 14-10 in a sloppy, defensive game that was hard to watch for both teams. Michigan ended up with 5 total turnovers and only 7 points given up from those turnovers. Michigan dropped to #17 in the AP poll and Michigan State jumped into the rankings at #21. Next week Michigan looks to bounce back when they take on the Indiana Hoosiers, and Michigan State will look to continue their strong play when they take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
