On Wednesday November 7th Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigned his position at the request of President Trump. Sessions has held the position since February 9, 2017. Trump named Sessions replacement as Matthew Whitaker, Session’s chief of staff and he will become acting attorney general. In a column for CNN last year Whitaker question if the Mueller investigation has gone too far. 

In March of 2017 Jeff Sessions recused himself from the Russia investigation. President Trump is reported to have never forgiven Sessions for that action and may be the reasoning for his firing. That investigation has been overseen by the deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein. Senate Democrats have called for Matthew Whitaker to recuse himself from the investigation. As of this posting Matthew Whitaker has made no comment on the issue.
