Santa Fe High School Shooting
Friday the 25, started off as a normal day for students who attended Santa Fe High School not far from Houstan. At around 7:30 a.m, shots rang out and the students relized they were the targets of potentially another mass shooting. The teenager who ambushed the school used a shotgun and a revolver to kill 10, and wound 10 people. He said he didn’t shoot the people he liked rather, he wanted to kill random targets. The shooter was also armed with non-functional homemade bombs. One was a pressure cooker with an alarm clock, but contained no explosive material. Witnesses said students were running from the school as gunshots continued. There was also someone who said they heard an alarm at the school go off during the chaos but the reason behind that is still unknown.
The shooter has been identified as 17 year old, Dimitrios Pagourtzis. He has been denied bail and accused of capital murder of the deaths of multiple people and for assault. Nine students and one teacher make up the ten who lost their lives.
Not much is know on the shooter’s motive or why he targeted people he didn’t know. One student who knew the shooter said that he was very quiet and wore a trench coach everyday. This is odd because of Texas’ blistering heat, even in the winter. The governor conveyed his sympathy to the public and said, “We need to do more than just pray for the victims and their families. It’s time in Texas that we take action to step up and make sure this tragedy is never repeated ever again.” This is the 22nd US school shooting since the beginning of the year, and the third instance in eight days in which a gunman was on a school campus (CNN).
