The Importance of Fire Drills
Dakota High School has had a total of two fire drills by the date of October 18th. Many students find these fire drills to be pointless since people have not been harmed by a fire in a school building in years. The point of these drills is to prepare the students to be able to respond to emergency situations safely and calmly. In the State of Michigan, three fire drills are required to be held before December first and two remaining throughout the rest of the school year. There must be a reasonable space between each drill. Some tips that the school follows are keeping up with Maintenance and keeping fire alarms throughout the school, making sure the landscaping is kept up with to ensure a safe evacuation, and making sure that all exits are always clear. Many state laws have been passed to regulate the storage and transportation of hazardous materials, prohibit the use of certain extinguishers, and to provide liability from certain people, in this case, the staff, inside of the schools. With three fire drills left in the school year it is important that students know the safety regulations set in place by Dakota High School and the Michigan State Law to keep them safe.
