StuGo Brings Hollywood to Dakota
From the pep assembly to the decorations for the dance, Student Government, otherwise known as StuGo, has been working tirelessly for the past month to put together our homecoming.
With teacher advisors, Mrs. Herberholz and Mrs. Young, StuGo was able to work behind the scenes to make sure that Dakota’s homecoming ran smoothly. StuGo members met every Monday after school to prepare, splitting into five different committees: Advertising, Court, Pep, Parade, and Decorations, all of which had special tasks.
The Senate of StuGo voted on spirit days while the advertising committee made sure that the word got out about the daily themes and exciting aspects of our school’s dance. The court committee put the voting together, along with choosing sashes and crowns for the winners. The pep rally committee planned a variety of entertaining games for the assembly which was held outside in the stadium. Games including tug-of-war and relay races were played with every grade level in a full-scale competition. For the prize of winning Dakota’s spirit week, each class could choose a teacher to get pied in the face. Unluckily for our writing for publication teacher, Mr. McLeod was pied in the face because the seniors had the most participation in dressing up.
The StuGo parade committee planned the route, contacted all the clubs and sports of our school to see if they wanted to participate in this event, delivered letters to the neighborhoods where the parade was taking place, and organized the official lineup. To top it all off, these members made sure everyone was in position while sporting their stylish neon yellow safety vests. After the parade was completed, StuGo’s members and National Honors Society volunteers picked up the leftover candy down the path they walked.
The StuGo decoration committee worked with the designer, Angela Butorac from Butorac Events and Décor, to pull together the amazing Hollywood theme. At the dance, when you first walked into the school atrium, a red carpet was laid out and teachers’ names were written on pink Hollywood Walk of Fame stars. Under a sign that read “Now Showing Homecoming in Hollywood,” red curtains were draped around the entrance while palm trees and giant Oscar statues stood to the sides.
All StuGo members proved their commitment by leaving the homecoming game early to decorate the school for the dance. They stayed all the way until midnight setting up and even came back the morning of the dance at 7:30am to finish up loose ends. All members worked until midmorning to make the dance as amazing as it could be.
After the dance, StuGo members cleaned up all the decorations, swept the confetti, and rearranged the tables back into their correct spot. They worked for hours, making sure that the atrium was spotless when they were done.
Pep Committee co-leader and StuGo Probation Officer Olivia Wheeler said, “StuGo puts in an enormous amount of time and energy into homecoming.” She went on to explain all the various things StuGo did from running the pep assembly to setting and cleaning up the dance. She also mentioned being “extremely grateful of everyone who helped.”

Great job Stugo! You guys are the hardest working kids in the school and don’t get nearly enough credit!

Great job to everyone and thank you to The Planet for covering the big event. I missed the actual festivities, but your coverage provided a great snap shop of all the behind the scenes work that the students put in for the event.
