The Florida “Don’t Say Gay” Bill Progresses

The Florida House and Senate has passed the controversial, “Don’t Say Gay” bill. This bill was passed in the house last month and is now on the way to Governor Ron DeSantis, which he has signaled he would pass the bill. This bill will ban classroom discussions and/or instruction about sexual orientation and gender identity in primary school.  Those who support the bill, say this is NOT endangering LGBTQ students, it is about allowing parents control and a say in their kids classroom curriculum. Those who oppose the bill, like senior, Jack Petocz stated, “The language and the supporters of the bill and the rhetoric around the bill really shows what this bill is, and it’s an attempt to hurt queer people like me.”

 

 

 

 

 

Since the beginning, this bill has rightfully provoked protests across the state of Florida. A rally was held by students at Pride Park in Miami beach. A walkout has been planned by Disney workers show support against the “Don’t Say Gay” bill every single day this week. After Disney’s response to the bill was lacking. The White House responded to the develop of this bill. President Joe Biden has stated, “Today, conservative politicians in Florida rejected those basic values by advancing legislation that is designed to target and attack the kids who need support the most.” LGBTQ students and families are looking for hope and unity during this difficult time.
