Why Animal Cruelty Laws Should Be Stronger

Animal cruelty laws can be very controversial. In some states there are little to no laws. When you think of animal cruelty you would normally think of dogs or cats getting abused or abandoned but it goes much deeper than that. Many pigs and cows at slaughter houses and farms will go for weeks on end not even being able to turn over. Big company’s support this form of animal abuse. For example Costco is a big  company that uses this type of enclosure for their animals.

Many animal abuse cases will get overlooked but just by overlooking animal abuse it can lead to bigger issues. 71 percent of domestic abuse victims have reported that their abuser also targeted animals. When dealing with this type of issue the most a person could receive for this abuse is a year jail sentence or a $1,00 fine but there is nothing stopping the person from going out and doing this to another animal.

Due to the weak protection laws only the most serious cases are looked at. Very few cases are prosecuted. Iowa is the only state that does not have laws that provide penalties for animal torture on the first offense.. Nearly 1 million animals are reported to be abused, tortured, or killed each year. Those are only the cases that have been reported or taken action on.

Many animal abuse cases are witnessed but no one speak up or does anything . Animals can’t protect themselves so we need to protect them. They can’t speak up for themselves. We need to be the voices for all the animals being hurt and neglected. I’ve linked a petition to this page to help fight for more animal laws and end animal cruelty. If you would like to check out more petitions the website is called change.org.
