How You Can Help Puerto Rico
Okay. I know it’s not a “trending” topic anymore, but Puerto Rico is desperately in need of help.
Before I go any further, it’s important to realize that Puerto Rico is actually a part of the U.S. Although it’s an unincorporated territory rather than a state, Puerto Ricans are still U.S. citizens.
Hurricane Maria, which formed on September 16th, is estimated to have caused $50 billion in damage for Puerto Rico and $95 billion total. More than 95% of the island is without power and could be another 4 to 6 months before it’s fully restored. At least 55% of Puerto Rico is without clean water.
The category 4 storm also affected the Lesser Antilles, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, the Bahamas, etc. Maria is named as the worst natural disaster to hit Dominica.
Now a month later, Puerto Rico is still in devastation and will continue to be if we don’t help. This is not a political issue. It is a matter of life and death. So please, donate what you can.
With that said, here are some of the fundraisers and organizations that won’t scam you and will actually send the much needed supplies and money to Puerto Rico:
- Save the Children
- Unicef
- Americares Foundation
- Direct Relief
- The @ Pack Initiative
- International Medical Corps
- Unidos Por Puerto Rico
- Somos Una Voz*
*Somos Una Voz was a disaster relief concert that was created by Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez and featured many artists, actors, and other people of influence. While the concert may be over (it was on Saturday, October 14th), you are still open to donate.
Your donation will support the student journalists of Dakota High School. Your contribution will allow us to purchase equipment and cover our annual website hosting costs.
