Neuralink: Should it be trusted?

Is putting computer chips in our brains a good idea?

What is Neuralink:

Neuralink is a relatively new company founded and owned by Elon Musk, the same founder of Tesla and SpaceX. Neuralink is quite different from other tech company’s as it doesn’t introduce cars, or phones, or basic tech gadgets we usually thing of, instead the products that Neuralink is creating are brain chips. That’s right, Neuralink is creating computer chips that can be attached to the brain, and connect you to actually computers, or as Musk claims, can even solve health issues in the body with the chip. The company which was founded in 2016, has been constantly releasing new technology and updates on their journey to creating this brain chip, and it’s also rumored the chips will soon start being tested on humans sometime in 2022, or even 2023.

The possibilities:

Neuralink brings many new possibilities to the human body. Imagine interacting with a computer without even touching it or being near it, just by thinking. Or imagine playing any song of your choice just by a thought. Imagine playing being able to search up anything through your own brain, through search engines like google. These are all possibilities that Neuralink could present along with many more physical ones. Elon Musk claims Neuralink could even solve physical problems such as allowing the paraplegic to walk, or solve nervous system problems using the chip, or even psychological problems. Elon says as the years come, the more the features and newer possibilities the chip can present. The chip just seems to good to be true and it would certainly be a new breakthrough in humanity, probably a bigger breakthrough than planes, or cars, if Elon’s claims are true of course. As stated earlier, the device could be released as early as 2023 or maybe even sooner, many are waiting or the unveil of this new technological breakthrough.

The procedure & speculations:

How will this brain chip be implanted into ones brain you might ask? First the skin and a piece of the skull will be removed, and the chip placed in, most likely on the side of the head, and the devices electrodes will stick out and attach to the surface of the brain. Sounds worrying? Many people think so, and are questioning the safety of the procedure along with the chip as a whole. Elon though, says that he wants the installation procedure to be as quick and as painless as possible, and that he wants the procedure to be more like the LASIK eye surgery. Other people question the whole chip and the idea itself, the idea of connecting a computer device to your brain could have multiple things that could go wrong, some wonder what would occur if someone were to hack into someone’s chip, could the hacker control the person, or do other things? Or could the government spy on your thoughts or be able to manipulate you? These are all possible problems or risks that can occur with this type of technology, and many are not ready to welcome it. In my own opinion, although I think the technology is incredible and could bring many cool features or solve many problems internally, I do not trust the device, basically for the same risks that were listed above, such as risk of getting hacked.
