WATERTOWN, SD — Watertown police say a 16-year-old boy has been arrested after a series of vehicle burglaries reported over several days across the city. Investigators say the thefts happened in multiple parts of town and involved cash, gift cards and three firearms.
The Watertown Police Department says the arrest came during an ongoing investigation into more than a dozen burglary reports. The teenager has been charged in connection with several of the incidents, and officers say more arrests are expected as the case develops.
Dozens of burglary reports prompted the investigation
Police say the burglaries came in over the past several days, creating a broader pattern that drew officers into a townwide investigation. The reports added up to more than a dozen separate incidents, according to the department.
Authorities have not said exactly how many vehicles were entered in each case, but they say the crimes were spread throughout Watertown rather than centered in one neighborhood. That wider footprint appears to have helped investigators connect the complaints as part of the same string of break-ins.
Items reported stolen include cash, gift cards and firearms, raising the stakes of the case beyond ordinary theft complaints. Police have not said whether the guns have been recovered.
Teenager charged with burglary and theft offenses
Police say the 16-year-old juvenile male is facing three counts of criminal entry of a motor vehicle, along with one count of petty theft for property valued at $400 or less and one count of tampering with a motor vehicle.
The department did not release the teen’s name, which is typical in juvenile cases. Officers also did not say where the arrest was made or whether anyone else was taken into custody at the same time.
Because the case is still active, police say the arrest is only one part of a larger investigation. Additional charges or arrests could follow as detectives sort through the reported burglaries and stolen property.
Police say the investigation is still active
The Watertown Police Department says the case remains open and that more arrests are expected. That suggests investigators believe more than one person may have been involved in the vehicle burglaries.
Police have not released information about how the suspect was identified or what evidence led to the arrest. They also have not said whether the burglaries happened overnight, how the vehicles were accessed or whether surveillance footage played a role.
For now, investigators are continuing to piece together the pattern of break-ins and recover stolen property where possible. The department says it expects to provide more updates if the case expands.
Residents urged to lock vehicles and report suspicious activity
Along with the arrest announcement, police reminded residents to lock their vehicles whenever they are unattended. Officers say even short periods away from a car can create an opportunity for theft.
The department also asked people to report suspicious activity to police at 605-882-6210. That public reporting, officers say, can help investigators spot patterns faster and respond to possible break-ins before more property is taken.
Police thanked the community for its help and said that cooperation can make a difference in keeping the city safe. The reminder comes as investigators continue working through the list of burglary complaints.
What the reported thefts mean for the wider community
The burglary spree has drawn attention because the stolen items include not just cash and gift cards but also firearms. That mix of property can complicate an investigation and raises concern for residents whose vehicles were targeted.
For Watertown drivers, the case is also a reminder that unsecured vehicles can become easy targets during a local crime wave. Police have emphasized prevention while they continue tracing the thefts and any connection between the separate incidents.
With one juvenile already charged and officers saying more arrests are likely, the case remains in motion. Police have not said when they expect the investigation to be finished.
