Traffic slowed near the George Washington Bridge after a deadly motorcycle crash on the Trans Manhattan Expressway

Motorcyclist Killed in Trans Manhattan Expressway Crash as Morning Commute Backs up Near George Washington Bridge in Washington Heights

Posted on October 24, 2026

NEW YORK, NY — A motorcyclist was killed early Thursday in a crash with a tractor-trailer on the Trans Manhattan Expressway, snarling traffic for hours near the inbound George Washington Bridge. The collision happened during the morning commute and led authorities to divert drivers onto local streets in Washington Heights.

Port Authority Police said officers got reports of the crash at about 5:19 a.m. on the upper-level eastbound roadway. When emergency responders arrived, they found the rider critically hurt. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck driver was not injured. Police said the crash is still under investigation.

Police and emergency crews responded before sunrise

The Port Authority Police Department said the first reports came in just after dawn’s earliest commute window began. Officers responded to the upper-level eastbound Trans Manhattan Expressway, a route that carries traffic toward the George Washington Bridge and into a heavily traveled part of upper Manhattan.

FDNY personnel and Port Authority tunnel and bridge agents joined police at the scene. Officials said the motorcyclist was found in critical condition, but emergency workers were unable to save the rider.

No name has been released for the person who died. Authorities have not said what led to the crash or whether any charges are possible as the investigation continues.

Bridge approaches shut down and traffic spilled into neighborhood streets

The fatal crash quickly caused major disruption on one of the region’s busiest commute corridors. Authorities closed key inbound approaches to the George Washington Bridge, which backed up traffic heading into the crossing from the Manhattan side.

With the main route blocked, drivers were pushed off the expressway and onto local streets in Washington Heights. That shift created congestion well beyond the crash scene as commuters tried to find alternate paths across the neighborhood.

The impact was felt most sharply during the early-morning rush, when even a brief closure can ripple through the surrounding street grid and delay travel for miles.

NYPD traffic agents helped manage the Washington Heights gridlock

To help control the buildup, the NYPD deployed traffic agents throughout Washington Heights. Their job was to direct vehicles away from the closed roadway and keep cars moving through streets that were suddenly carrying more volume than usual.

The response highlighted how quickly a single serious crash near the bridge can affect the wider transportation network. The George Washington Bridge is a critical link for commuters, commercial vehicles and neighborhood traffic, so closures often lead to immediate delays on both sides of the crossing.

Officials said the road remained closed for several hours while investigators worked and crews handled the scene.

The roadway reopened after 10 a.m. following hours of delays

Authorities said the Trans Manhattan Expressway reopened after 10 a.m., easing the backups that had built throughout the morning. By that point, commuters had already faced prolonged delays and rerouting across the area.

The reopening allowed traffic to return to the normal inbound pattern toward the bridge, though residual congestion likely remained as vehicles filtered back onto the expressway. Officials did not immediately provide details on how long the investigation would take or whether further lane restrictions would be needed.

For drivers, the incident was a reminder that crashes near the George Washington Bridge can create long-lasting effects even after the roadway is cleared.

Questions remain about what caused the fatal collision

Police have not released the identity of the motorcyclist or described the moments before impact. They also have not said whether weather, speed or any other factor may have played a role in the wreck.

What is clear is that the collision involved a motorcycle and a tractor-trailer, and that the outcome was deadly for the rider. The tractor-trailer driver was reported unhurt.

The Port Authority Police Department said the crash remains under investigation. Any further findings would come from that inquiry as investigators piece together how the vehicles collided on the expressway.
