CANTON, SD — An adult man died after a powerful explosion ripped through a residential area in Canton before dawn, sending a fireball into the night and leaving debris scattered across nearby streets, yards and rooftops.
The blast happened shortly before 12:30 a.m. near West Third Street and North Pleasant Street, just east of the railroad tracks. A Canton police officer was already heading to an unrelated call when officials said he saw the explosion happen and reached the scene within moments, finding a garage fully engulfed in flames.
Fire crews were called in immediately, and responders later said the force of the explosion spread wreckage far beyond the home involved. No other injuries were reported.
Officer witnesses blast and calls for fire crews
The Canton Police Department said the officer was en route to another call when he saw the explosion in real time. Once he arrived, he found the garage on fire and requested help from the Canton Volunteer Fire Department.
Officials described the initial response as immediate, with emergency crews moving quickly to secure the area and begin firefighting efforts. The scene remained active for hours, and officers and firefighters kept people back while they worked around the damaged property.
Surveillance video from a nearby home showed a bright fireball erupting in the darkness, underscoring how suddenly the blast occurred. By Monday morning, first responders were still on scene, and a perimeter of about one block remained in place as the investigation continued.
Debris landed on roofs, streets and railroad property
Lincoln County Emergency Manager Harold Timmerman said the explosion was strong enough to throw debris about a block in each direction. Pieces of the destroyed structure and surrounding material were found on roofs, in yards and along city streets and sidewalks.
Some debris also landed on the nearby railroad track, but Canton fire crews cleared it quickly. That response helped avoid any disruption to train traffic, even as the surrounding area remained closed off and visibly damaged.
At the property itself, a burned-out SUV shell remained in the driveway, surrounded by wood, metal and plastic debris. The blast also damaged neighboring homes, showing just how widely the force of the explosion reached in a matter of seconds.
Nearby homes show signs of the shockwave
Residents in the area reported damage that fit the strength of the blast. Teresa Zomer of the Sioux Valley News said cupboard doors were thrown open inside nearby homes, and at least one house had exterior windows broken.
Those details matched what crews found outside: scattered debris, damaged property and signs that the shockwave had moved well beyond the original residence. The neighborhood remained under a broad emergency perimeter while authorities assessed the scene.
Officials did not immediately release more information about the condition of the home beyond the garage fire and destruction seen after the explosion. But the impact on surrounding houses suggested the blast was violent enough to affect multiple properties in the area, not just the building where it started.
One man dead and no other injuries reported
Timmerman confirmed that an adult male died as a result of the explosion. Officials have not yet released his identity, and they said no other injuries were reported.
The Canton Police Department offered condolences to the victim’s family and asked the community to respect their privacy while they deal with the loss. Authorities have not said whether anyone else was in the home or nearby when the explosion occurred.
Emergency officials were still withholding many details by late morning Monday, saying more information would be released later. For now, the confirmed facts are limited to the fatality, the extent of the destruction and the ongoing response at the scene.
State fire marshal investigating cause as police see no criminal tie
The cause of the explosion is under investigation by the state fire marshal, according to Timmerman. Canton police said they have found no indication of criminal activity connected to the incident.
That leaves investigators focused on what happened inside or around the residence before the blast. Officials have not publicly identified a cause, and first responders did not give additional details while they remained on scene Monday morning.
The investigation is expected to continue as crews document damage and review the circumstances that led to the explosion. For the neighborhood, the immediate concern was stabilizing the site and keeping people away while authorities worked through the aftermath.
