Emergency responders at the scene of a rollover crash on a rural Nebraska road

Teen Killed in Rollover Crash Near North Platte After Vehicle Carrying Five Juveniles Left Road and Ejected All Four Passengers

Posted on October 24, 2026

NORTH PLATTE, NE — One teenager died Thursday after a rollover crash just west of North Platte that left four other young people hospitalized, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. The crash involved five people between the ages of 16 and 18, all traveling in the same vehicle on West South River Road near South Buffalo Road.

Deputies said the vehicle was heading west when it failed to negotiate a curve and rolled multiple times. All four passengers were thrown from the vehicle. The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, was not ejected and was also taken to Great Plains Health in North Platte for treatment.

Deputies say the vehicle rolled after missing a curve on West South River Road

The sheriff’s office said the crash happened in west-central Nebraska, where the roadway curves near South Buffalo Road. Investigators believe the vehicle left the road before rolling several times. The crash site was just west of the city of North Platte, a key regional hub along Interstate 80.

Officials did not identify the teens, and authorities have not released their names or said which one died. The statement from deputies focused on the sequence of the crash and the condition of the occupants after the rollover. The investigation is still being handled by the sheriff’s office.

The crash was serious enough that emergency responders had to transport every person in the vehicle. One passenger died after the wreck, while the others were hospitalized with injuries. Authorities did not provide a description of those injuries or say how long the hospitalized teens were expected to remain under care.

All four passengers were ejected while the driver stayed inside the vehicle

According to the sheriff’s office, every passenger was thrown from the vehicle during the rollover. That detail made the crash especially severe and likely contributed to the level of injury among the teens. The driver, by contrast, was not ejected because the driver had been wearing a seat belt, deputies said.

The vehicle itself is not described in the statement, and officials did not say how fast it was traveling or whether any other cars were involved. No other injuries were reported outside the five people in the vehicle. The crash remained a single-vehicle incident based on the information released by authorities.

Seat belt use was one of the few specific safety details provided. Deputies included it in their statement while describing who was and was not ejected from the vehicle. They did not say whether the other occupants were restrained before the rollover began.

Great Plains Health treated the injured teens after the wreck

After the crash, all of the injured occupants were taken to Great Plains Health in North Platte, according to the statement. That included the driver and the four passengers. The hospital became the immediate treatment site for the teens after emergency crews responded to the scene.

Authorities said the deceased teen’s name has not been released. The sheriff’s office also did not provide an age for the person who died beyond confirming that everyone in the vehicle was between 16 and 18 years old. No additional information was given about the families of those involved.

The hospital location underscores how quickly the scene shifted from a roadway emergency to critical care. The sheriff’s office did not describe how patients were transported or how many ambulances responded. Those operational details were not included in the public statement.

Investigators are still working to piece together what caused the crash

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said investigators are continuing to examine the crash. In its statement, deputies called speed a factor in the wreck. That suggests investigators believe the vehicle was moving fast enough to play a role in the driver’s inability to take the curve successfully.

Beyond that, officials have not said what else may have contributed. They did not mention weather, road surface conditions, mechanical failure or impairment. For now, the public account is limited to the failed curve, the rollover and the resulting injuries and fatality.

The investigation remains open, and deputies have not said whether any citations or charges are being considered. With the driver surviving and the passengers hospitalized, authorities are likely to continue reconstructing the sequence of events before releasing any further findings.

West South River Road crash adds to a deadly day for young passengers

The crash stands out because every person in the vehicle was a teenager or younger adult, and the outcome was especially severe for a group so young. One person died and four others were hospitalized, making the rollover one of the more serious local traffic incidents reported in the area this week.

Officials have not said where the teens were headed or why they were on that stretch of road. What is clear is that the vehicle went off course on a curve and rolled several times west of North Platte. The sheriff’s office said the investigation is still incomplete.

For now, the known facts are limited but grim: five young people were in one vehicle, speed was cited as a factor, the passengers were ejected, and one teen did not survive. The case remains under review by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
