Why You Shouldn’t Stereotype Readers

Readers have always been labeled as nerds, and it’s getting kind of tiring to be honest. We are either picked on for the genre of books we like to read or the fact that we prefer to read rather than socialize. But just because we read it doesn’t always mean that we are extremely smart and people really should stop assuming that. Sometimes we just read for the fun of it, and reading really isn’t that bad. If you take a chance to look at the millions of options, the millions of genres that there are, you’ll soon realize that there are so many beautiful things about literature, and that us readers don’t just see printed words on paper, we actually see a world made from our imagination.

Rudine Simms Bishop once said that, “Books are sometimes windows, offering views of worlds that may be real or imagined, familiar or strange. These windows are also sliding glass doors, and readers have only to walk through in imagination to become part of whatever world has been created and recreated by the author. When lighting conditions are just right, however, a window can also be a mirror. Literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us, and in that reflection we can see our own lives and experiences as part of the larger human experience. Reading, then, becomes a means of self-affirmation, and readers often seek their mirrors in books.” Reading not only opens up your imagination to new realities, but it also has so many amazing benefits can really help you in the future.

One of the many benefits that reading has is helping expand your vocabulary and this is very useful and important because you never know, maybe in the future you have to write a long essay, and you might want to replace some of the words you’ve repeated with something different that will make you sound smart. Another thing is mental stimulation. Mental Stimulation is the cure for boredom! It is when you are doing a mental activity that helps enrich the mind. So the more you use your brain, the more likely you are to enhance brain functioning, to enhance your chances of success, achievement and progress. So if you are a person who has a lot of free time and absolutely nothing to do, I definitely suggest reading.

Now if you are someone who has never picked up a book once in your life and like to think of them as boring and a waste of time and are thinking of keeping it that way, then you’ve probably been reading the wrong type. But you have had a change of mind and want to start reading but don’t know what type fits you, don’t worry, there a millions of genres to chose from such as Romance, Horror, Fantasy, Thriller/Sci-fi, etc. There are so many to chose from and it’s okay if it takes a little while to find the right one, and if you still don’t want to read that is perfectly fine, but just don’t go around judging others for liking something such as a fantasy book just because you don’t find it interesting.

We are not nerds, so don’t assume that we are because sometimes some of us might not take it to well, while others may think of it as a complement. Sometimes we read just to get away from reality, to take a break from the stressful moments in life, and there is nothing wrong with that. So anytime you see someone reading, don’t always assume that they are reading just for school, sometime we read for fun and besides, the genre might be far from anything school related.
