Applying to college is a stressful process. With all the essays, personal questions, and various documents you need to get turned in, plus the added pressure of that fast-approaching deadline, it is easy to get overwhelmed. Whether you are applying now or will be applying in a few years, here are some tips that I, a current senior, have accumulated after working through the application process:

1. Start Early

Start your applications as early as possible. The Common App opens on August 1st, and I would recommend at least starting a profile around that time. Starting early ensures that you have plenty of time to complete everything and that you won’t have to cram the week before the application is due.

2.  Do Your Research

Do thorough research of each college that you are interested in. Look at their programs, clubs, campus, dorms and other factors before you commit to applying. This will not only weed out the colleges that don’t provide everything you are looking for, but it also will help with possible essays asking why you want to go to a specific campus.

3. Make a Schedule

Plan out when you will do specific tasks for your application. Setting a deadline for when you want certain sections or essays done will allow you to complete them in a timely manner and reduce stress. Just make sure you leave enough time to edit your work.

4. Answer Personal Questions First

Fill out all the necessary information on the application first including your background, family, and activities. You already know the answers to these questions without even thinking, making it the easiest section. I found that completing this first gets it out of the way so you don’t have to worry about it later and gives you more time to work on sections that will have more influence on your application.

5. Focus on Those Essays

The essay truly is the most important component of your application since it allows the admissions team to better understand you as an individual, so spend time on it. Plan out your essays thoroughly and ask for feedback from teachers well before the deadline to be able to revise and finalize before submitting.

6. Talk to Your Counselors

Having a relationship with your counselor is crucial. Talking to them about your college plans and goals in life during the year will allow them to help you make the right choices. They use what they know about you to fill out the counselor recommendation, so making sure you talk to them beforehand is essential. Your counselor is also a great resource if you have any questions about the application process.

7. Be Genuine

When writing your essays, be authentic and real. I understand the desire to write something you think will make you look like the best candidate, but being true and simply writing about who you are and what you like will stand out more to colleges. Let your personality shine through!
