The Princess Switch: Christmas Confusion
Convenient coincidences, a sabotaging mean girl, and a cryptic old man giving vague advice; this movie rolls almost every over-done cliché into an hour-and-a-half long Netflix Original. This Christmas movie tells the story of an ordinary baker and a soon to be princess (both played by Vanessa Hudgens) who look eerily similar randomly deciding to switch lives for two days. Stacey, the baker, gets to know the prince of Belgravia and Margaret, her royal doppelgänger, spends time with Stacey’s best friend and his sassy young daughter. Within these two days, both girls manage to fall in love and find more happiness than they ever had in their real lives. There’s also a baking competition that fails to add suspense to the plot and was only really included so Stacey and Margaret would run into each other. Most of the acting was awkward and there was an obvious lack of chemistry between the characters. Every aspect of the movie was cheesy, from the meet-cute to the first kiss. There was even a not-so-subtle advertisement for another Netflix Original movie that was almost painful to watch.
That being said, I still kind of enjoyed it. As bad as it was, I found myself invested in the story, and excited for the fate of the characters. It was cliché, but strangely charming. It had that Christmas magic, happily ever after vibe that just makes you feel happy. I truly believe it can be an enjoyable film to watch if you’re not trying to take it too seriously. Otherwise, it could be something to make fun of with your friends.
