What Is it?
Time capsules have been a very traditional thing to do for many years. A time capsule is a way to preserve and remember historic goods and information for future generations and people. Time capsules are commonly seen with archaeologists, anthropologists, or historians. This year specifically, the senior class of 2024 have begun making time capsules to remember their last year of high school. The senior time capsules have been recently trending across various social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Pinterest since the near end of the previous summer.

Why is it a good idea?
Finishing High school is a very big achievement in one’s life, it includes many important and crucial things that help you shape your life for the future and grow into who you’re going to be. Creating a time capsule of your last year of high school helps commemorate your important time and effort you spent at the school. Also, it could be a predominant thing to show your future children or even grandchildren; a way to show what high school was like for you so your children can learn and grow from your experiences or compare theirs to your own. Some say high school is the best years of their lives, that’s why a time capsule would be a great thing to look back on when you’re older, to remember the good times. Even if your high school years are not the best years of your life, it was an important four years that made you the person you are/ are going to be. That should be remembered and celebrated for many years beyond your high school years.

What do you put in a Senior Time Capsule?
There is a variety of things you can put in your time capsule. Everyone’s experiences are different in high school and the most important thing is putting in things that mean a lot to you or hold a significance in your time spent in school.
Some things you may consider putting in your time capsule:
– Prom/ homecoming tickets
– Sporting event tickets
– Graduation tassels
– College acceptance letters
– Pictures throughout the year
– Letter to your future self or kids
– Your favorite song, book, movie, television show
– College essay
– Make a playlist from the year

What to do with the Time Capsule?
When you’re making your time capsule first you must decide where the box is going to be stored. Sometimes the box is buried or stored in a more accessible location like a closet or an attic. Most importantly, be sure that the box you put your items in is tough, water-proof, and sealable in order to protect the items and preserve them for the years. Another crucial part of making the capsule is writing down where exactly the time capsule is and setting a date to open it. Consider using an important date like your day of graduation ten or twenty years from now. If you make a senior time capsule, your future self definitely will not regret it!
