Importance of a Routine

A routine is defined as a conscious way of doing things repetitively and in a specific order made up of many habits or steps taken to accomplish a certain goal according to Fort Behavioral Health. A study done by the National Center for Biotechnology Information stated that having good daily habits at earlier stages of life determines your success for later in life. By maintaining good self-control and discipline throughout your life you are setting yourself up for success. Below is a list of the power routines can have in your day-to-day life.  

 

Serve as an Anchor: An anchor stops a ship from drifting away, similarly, an anchor routine keeps us on the intended path rather than shifting to unhealthy habits. For example, by going to sleep at the same time every night you are providing yourself with a sense of stability. Your body gets used to the amount of sleep it gets and allows you to be more capable of managing unpredictable occurrences in your life.  

Promotes Self-Care: By setting a routine in place, you can prioritize things you think of as most important. By doing things like yoga, going to the gym, or going to bed early you can give yourself happiness and a feeling of fulfillment. By going to the gym, you are aware that you are being healthy and helping your body feel the same, causing you to feel content.  

Saves Time: To most people, time is an extremely valuable resource because it is something that we can never change or get back. By having a routine, you can save time that would otherwise be spent either planning or doing nothing to better yourself. A routine involves more than just work and things to help others, do not forget to think about yourself and give time just for you.  

Break Bad Habits: Routines are related to repetition. By doing the same thing day after day, you are more likely to break your bad habits that are doing you no good. Although the process may be slow, after time the unhealthy things in your life can be replaced with good.  

Builds Momentum: By doing the same thing over and over, it becomes easier to persist. When you go to the gym daily you begin to not think about it as much and it comes naturally to you like it is embedded in your life.  

Achieve Goals: It is difficult to try to reach all your goals at once, developing a routine that goes along with your goal is a significant way to ensure success. An artist does not become amazing by painting once a month, they must work daily to become better through repetition.  

 

When you do not have a routine, you are more likely to be filled with feelings of stress and unmanageability. A routine creates a structure in your life promoting mental, physical, and emotional health. It is completely normal to want to switch your routines from weekdays to weekends, if you are mindful of the choices that you make you are on the path to success and happiness.
