Reflecting on September: Suicide Prevention Month

Starting the conversation sooner.

Reflecting+on+September%3A+Suicide+Prevention+Month

Suicide Prevention month is time to inform, destigmatize, and uplift people who have been affected by suicide. Suicide is the leading cause of death for young adults in America. Suicide occurs when mental illnesses go untreated. The views on mental health have been shifting, giving us an opportunity to open the doors to more conversation.

When discussing this with my classmates one stated, “I wish we knew we could get more help before we are in a crisis.” He makes a great point. We have a Presentation each year about how to see the signs of someone who is suicidal, but we should also give students the opportunity to identify when they are struggling before they are in a dangerous situation.

If you or someone you know is struggling, try reaching out. Starting this conversation can be difficult, putting yourself out there and being vulnerable is not easy. Finding the right person to talk to can take time, but with persistence you can find someone who makes you feel comfortable and heard.  School counselors is great place to start. At Dakota Mrs. Lang is a great person to talk to.

Be at The BE AWARE 5K Saturday October 23 9:30 am to support suicidal prevention.
