Snippets of Serbia

Since I’m an exchange student and I’ve only been at Dakota for a couple of weeks, I can’t really write a story that I know you guys would like (because I don’t know what you like yet), so instead I’m going to introduce you to my country. Serbia is a small country at the crossroads between Central and Southeast Europe (Central Balkans). It’s a country of AMAZING food and kind of weird people. But in a positive way!

Serbs are humble, outgoing and LOUD people. We believe that wet hair outside can kill you. And walking bare feet? Um, my grandma doesn’t approve. And she’s the boss. The last thing that guarantees your death is promaja (the draft that comes in when you open more than one window in the house). I’ve tried before and I almost died, so don’t even think about it!

We are really proud to call ourselves Serbs and we have so much respect for the people that other nations know us for. Nikola Tesla, Novak Djokovic, Ivo Andric, Mihailo Pupin…and all other athletes. Besides wonderful cities like Belgrade and Novi Sad, Serbia has a lot of places where you can get away from the city crowd. Breathtaking sights are available on every mountain.

We look at time like Dali did, so Serbian hour can mean 5 ‘normal’ hours sometimes. So don’t get mad at me if I’m a couple hours late. Also, did I mention that our food is THE BEST EVER? Writing this is making me so hungry…

All in all, although we yell a lot, once you get to know someone from Serbia better, you’ll see that deep down we have a good heart.

And yeah, we are huggers.  So, I’m sending you one virtual Serbian hug!
