MARION, SD — A Marion woman died and a Marion man was left in critical condition after a rollover crash in Turner County on Thursday afternoon, according to the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

The crash happened shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 29 at the intersection of 447th Avenue and 268th Street, about five miles north of Marion. Investigators said a 2023 Buick Envision was heading south when it left the roadway, crossed a field approach and rolled.

Both people were wearing seat belts, the Highway Patrol said.

Crash happened north of Marion after Buick left the roadway

Emergency responders were sent to the rural intersection after receiving a report of a single-vehicle crash. The location is in Turner County, a largely agricultural area southeast of Sioux Falls.

According to the Highway Patrol, the Buick was traveling southbound on 447th Avenue when it veered off the road. After crossing a field approach, the SUV rolled.

The agency has not said what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. No other vehicles were reported in the crash.

Passenger died and driver was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital

The passenger, a 90-year-old Marion woman, died from injuries suffered in the rollover. Authorities have not released her name yet, saying they are waiting to notify family members first.

The driver, a 90-year-old Marion man, sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital for treatment. Officials have also withheld his name for now.

Because the investigation is still active, the Highway Patrol has not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the crash.

Seat belts were in use as investigators piece together what happened

Officials said both occupants were restrained at the time of the wreck. That detail is part of the continuing investigation, though it is not yet clear how the crash unfolded or whether any roadway or vehicle factors played a role.

Rural crashes can happen quickly on county roads and intersections where vehicles may travel at higher speeds and road edges can drop off abruptly. The Highway Patrol did not offer any broader safety warning connected to this incident.

For now, investigators are focused on the sequence that sent the Buick off the roadway and into the rollover.

Turner County crash adds to a tragic week for the Marion area

The wreck occurred just outside Marion, a small community in southeastern South Dakota, and drew first responders to a quiet stretch of road north of town.

At this stage, the main facts are limited to the time, location and the condition of the two occupants. The names of both Marion residents remain pending as authorities complete notification of relatives.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate. No charges, citations or additional findings have been announced.
