She’s the First—Update and Fundraiser
Since their first meeting in November, Dakota High School’s chapter of She’s the First has made significant progress in their mission of further advocating for girls’ education (see my previous article for more information).
Meetings have consistently taken place every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month on Microsoft Teams. Discussion topics at each meeting include the impact of COVID-19 on the education of girls in rural villages and the significance of well-known female role models.
At a meeting in January, the club decided which country their proceeds from the previous year would assist. Preceding the vote, members split into groups and found startling facts to explain why a specific region deserved the money. After much debate, the club concluded that Guatemala, a country where only 69% of adult women know how to read, would receive the $900 raised. They look forward to hearing back from the girls they have supported with this donation soon.
In addition, the club has also established an official E-Board for the 2020-2021 school year:
President—Taylor Burnham
Treasurer/Secretary—Rachel Cushard
Social Media Chair—Alisa Livadic
Public Relations—Mindy Nguyen
On March 3rd, She’s the First will be holding their first fundraiser of the year at Chipotle (27810 23 Mile Rd in Chesterfield) from 4-8 pm. 33% of all proceeds raised will return to the club that they will use to donate to another group of girls in need. Everyone is encouraged to spread the word and eat at Chipotle to support the organization, either by mentioning the fundraiser at checkout or using this online order code: R4AWH4E. Any purchase is appreciated.
She’s the First hopes to continue campaigning and raising money for their cause. Future endeavors include hanging up flyers around the school to spread the word and more fundraisers, including a possible t-shirt sale. With the determination and passion exhibited by members of this group, there is no doubt this club will be successful and reach its goals.
Your donation will support the student journalists of Dakota High School. Your contribution will allow us to purchase equipment and cover our annual website hosting costs.
Taylor Burnham is a senior at Dakota High School. This is her first year writing for The Dakota Planet, and she is super excited to be a staff member....
