R.I.P Toxic Masculinity: Death by COVID-19

Starting off 2020, men’s fashion took a turn towards embracing their feminine side. This trend mainly started to “pop off” at the beginning of the first quarantine, when many first started to find themselves. Being cut off from the world also means being cut off from the influence of others, and the only thing people were left with was their own judgement.

Although men might be wearing more “feminine” clothing, it also has no effect on their masculinity. Many very masculine men have also been participating, this is due to the rapidly popularizing idea that clothes, make-up, and many other accessories and factors have no gender, and do not define a man’s masculinity.

This new trend of men’s fashion was great influenced by Jaden Smith, Lil Uzi Vert, Harry Styles, Billy Porter, Keiynan Lonsdale, and many more. These Celebs were not afraid to show their feminine side, despite being masculine, wearing dresses and skirts to formal events. This trend was also heavily promoted on the popular social app, TikTok.

TikTok is a social media app that allows it’s users to share short video clips ranging from 3-60 seconds long. Many influencers on this app are in their late teens and early twenties, and a majority of them are apart of this change in men’s fashion. As days go on, it becomes more ordinary to see men doing makeup tutorials, men wearing eyeliner, men in dresses, and men in skirts.

Recently, it has become popular on the app for men to be dressed up in Maid costumes, “Slutty” Bunny costumes, and even “Slutty” Nurse costumes. These types of videos usually start off with the men looking “ugly” or more rough, generally from first waking up, then the video transitions to the men in these costumes. Some men even start off the video looking very masculine and transition into the costumes from there.

Although the Maid, Bunny, and Nurse costumes have started to recently gain popularity, men in dresses, skirts, and makeup is nothing new for TikTok. Influencer Zachary Smith (zsmittty), has made it known that clothes have no gender. Not only does he take photoshoots in “women’s clothing” but he also has complimenting make-up looks for each outfit.

Zachary is only one of the many. Some other well-known influencers on the app who do the same are Tristan Valdez (tristanpvaldez), Vincent Hacker (vhackerr), Jordan Huxhold (jhuxhold), and Aiden Ricklef (aidenricklef). These men are also known for making make-up on men more natural.
