Wonder Woman 1984, a review

Over the Christmas break my family, like many others, was very excited to see the newest Wonder Woman movie. After the action packed 2017 film, featuring Gal Gadot and Chris Pine, everyone expected a jaw dropping sequel. However, I was incredibly disappointed by this movie. The plot was messy and chaotic, the characters were underdeveloped, and the ending was overall unsatisfying.

The movie takes place in 1984, sixty years after the first movie. Diana Prince has moved on with her life and seems to have stepped down from being a superhero. A colleague of hers finds this special artifact that grants wishes, but not without a price. Diana wishes for Steve, who died heroically at the end of the 2017 film, to come back to her, and the colleague Barbra, played by Kristen Wiig, wishes to “be like Diana”. Both of their wishes are granted and things seem to be going well for a while. Steve is back and Diana is finally happy again, and Barbra becomes confident and gains all of Wonder Womans powers. Then there is another plot where a salesman, Maxwell Lord, uses the special artifact and absorbs it to become the thing itself. He grants himself all the oil in basically the world, and goes on to give out wishes to just about anyone. Surprise, the world starts to fall apart.

One of my biggest problems with this movie is Maxwell’s character. I understand being blinded by greed, but this guy sends the world into chaos and still doesn’t see a problem. His whole character is unrealistic from the start, and somehow flies under the radar for months before Diana stops him. I also don’t like Barbra’s character. The movie would have still made sense, and maybe been better, if her character as been cut entirely. The whole time I couldn’t decide if she was a main character or a side character. She had this whole villain arc and we never really even got to know her.

Finally, the ending. Maxwell makes a broadcast through every radio station and tv in the world asking people to wish for things so he can take their health as his price. The only way to break this artifacts curse is either to destroy it, killing Maxwell, or get everyone in the world to take back their wish. Diana gains control of the broadcast and gives her own speech. Miraculously, she gets the entire world to renounce their wishes *insert eye roll here*. The ENTIRE WORLD??? Seven billion people who are suddenly richer, in love, famous, or had their lives made better are all going to renounce their wishes? It’s so unrealistic and leaves something to be desired. Sure, DC wouldn’t have Wonder Woman actually kill someone to solve this problem, but they also could have written a different plot. They could have made it that just Maxwell had to take back his wish and since he was the stone, every wish he granted would be gone.

Overall, I was very disappointed by this movie and I expected more, this only further solidified Marvel’s supremacy.
