NFL Week 1 Key Storylines
NFL Football is officially back for their 100th season! The league kicked off the regular season this past weekend with their first slate of games. These are some of the results were for the first set of games for the season!
The season kicked off last Thursday with a game between the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears from Soldier Field in Chicago, one of the league’s few classic rivalry games. The Packers won 10-3 behind a stifling performance from their defense and an 8-yard TD pass from Aaron Rodgers to TE Jimmy Graham. The Bears, despite an amazing performance from their defense, struggled heavily on the offensive side of the ball, especially from their QB Mitchell Trubisky.
Then came Sunday, the traditional day that hosts a full afternoon and evening’s worth of games. The first game people had eyes on Sunday was the Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans from FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland. The Browns were coming off an offseason where they acquired star WR Odell Beckham Jr from the New York Giants. Pair that with ending last season on a good note and having the talent on both sides of the ball to be elite, the Browns came into the season as one of the most hyped up teams in the league. That hype only lasted so long as the Browns got blown out by the Titans 43-13. The Titans came out and completely dominated both sides of the ball. Another big storyline was this year’s #1 draft pick Kyler Murray making his NFL debut for the Cardinals against the Lions. After struggling heavily in the first half, Murray picked things up and led his team from down 24-6 to send it to overtime. The game had a final score of 27-27 as neither team could deliver the final blow.
The first Monday Night Football game between the New Orleans Saints and the Houston Texans provided an exciting thriller. After the Texans were leading for the first three quarters, the Saints came back and held the lead throughout almost all of the fourth quarter, until Texans QB Deshaun Watson fired a 37-yard TD pass to Will Fuller IV to put the Texans up 28-27 with 37 seconds left. With so little time remaining, Saints QB Drew Brees drove down the field to set up a 58-yard field goal attempt for kicker Will Lutz. Lutz drilled it with no time left on the clock, giving the Texans the win 30-28.
Those are some of the main stories from Week 1 of the NFL season! This season should be another exciting one!
