5 tips from Dakota’s Counseling office–On Depression and Anxiety

It reminds one of the grim yet absolute truths in life. That whenever lies a blub that shins and burns as bright as the setting sun, there too hides one that should fall dark beneath it. As of this 2017-2018 school year, it had become increasing apparent to most, myself included, that the grades (10 to 12) all share a heighten air of both depression and anxiety. With that information fresh on my mind, I made it my personal mission to seek out ways to help my peers whom may find themselves in this position. My associate and I went to the school’s counseling office and spoke to trusted Dakota counselors: Mrs. Carr and Koskos, asking what are the best ways to detail with these growing issues. These are the tips they gave:

1. Avoid drinking caffeine, as it can increase anxiety in some, this includes coffee, energy drinks, etc.

2. Stay away from alcohol, it is a depressant.

3. Take walks, breath, and yoga; relax yourself and try to keep a clear mind.

4. Try journaling or poem writing, in my personal experience these two have helped me both learn to better understand my emotions and express them in a more productive way.

5. Finally, seek out professional help, a trusted professional to confide in and help you move closer to the best version of yourself.

That is all, but before I should take my leave, here’s an open note to the readers in which this article was made for: Of the importance pieces of information and text we are expected to remember, remember this; you are important, you are incredible, and you are not broken. There are people who care about you and wish to see you achieve everything they know you can do. Remember this and have a wonderful day!
