The Commuter Review

“What kind of person are you?”

Another surprise hit from b-movie director king Jaume Collet-Serra; who honestly is becoming a favorite director of mine; his newest action-thriller “The Commuter” is another great addition to his ever-improving filmography as he continues to show that he wants to make enjoyable thrillers with interesting concepts that, while not masterpieces, never disappoint in terms of entertainment and rewatch ability.

From the very first time I saw “Non-Stop,” knew that I should be on the lookout for what he puts out, and can safely say his newest film doesn’t disappoint. What I love, and frankly admire, most about Collet-Serra is his ideology on how he makes movies. He really doesn’t care if it gets fantastic reviews, because he knows that if people enjoy it, he did his job. The one thing that bugged me about his direction here was that there were some choppy scenes and some close-ups that didn’t flow very well, but other than that his direction of action was great.

I really hope it’s not just me, but Liam Neeson’s on-screen presence has to be one of the best out of any actor I’ve ever seen. Every time I see him on screen kicking ass or just talking, I love it, and with “The Commuter” it’s all the same; I loved every second he was on screen. Vera Farmiga had such an interesting character that her performance really needed to sell it, and I’m so glad it did. I can’t really think of any other standouts, but seeing Sam Neill was so great.

Even though I would have to give the edge to “Non-Stop,” there is no denying that Jaume Collet-Serra’s “The Commuter” is a great time and one hell of an enjoyable ride from start to finish. With an intriguing idea, solid action and thrills, and Liam Neeson being the badass he is, I definitely recommend you go out and see this with some friends or by yourself; because honestly you deserve it. Plus, the opening montage is one of the finest openings of all-time.
