As winter break begins, you might find yourself lacking in things to do. There’s so many days to hang out with friends, relax and have fun. In this article, I’ll give you a detailed list of things that might keep you busy over the break!
Starting out on top, are the most common activities. One thing you could do is go ice skating. You can do this in an assortment of places around the area. These places include, the Mount Clemens Ice Arena located on Groesbeck, Suburban Ice located off of 25 mile road, or you could even travel down town to Campus Martius. In addition to this, you could also go skiing or snowboarding at many places. You can travel to Pine Knob Ski Resort in Clarkston, Alpine Valley in White Lake, Mt Holly in Holly, or Mt Brighton in Brighton. All of these resorts are relatively close and accessible to all those in the area.
Next, there are many winter events that take place during break. One activity nearby is the Civic Center Sled Hill in Clinton Township. This is a fun event that is local and free to all. The next place is a bit farther away from home, but a super fun experience in the winter. Frankenmuth is a place that everyone has heard of no doubt. It is about an hour away, but totally worth the drive. At Frankenmuth, you will find a store called Bronner’s. This store has all the Christmas décor you can think of and can even make custom ornaments for you. Next, you’ll find many restaurants and shops to keep you busy. As you walk, there will be many Christmas lights to catch your eyes. You may even stumble upon their horse carriages. Taking carriage rides during the winter is super fun and shows you the beauty of the area! If this doesn’t sound like your thing, there’s something else near by that might be. Zehnder’s Splash Village is just down the street. This is a huge indoor waterpark and hotel that is newly renovated. This is a warm activity that you can enjoy in the winter.
Another fun event takes place at Glenlore Trails. This is a park in Commerce Township that creates Christmas trails. The trail has an abundance of lights and is even interactive. On the trails, there are food trucks for you to sit at and dine. This is a great event that allows you to enjoy the outdoors and look at Christmas lights all while spending time with loved ones. Now, if you don’t feel like spending money, you could also do this on your own. You can find neighborhoods that are decorated to the extreme and drive through to look at lights. On top of these two way of looking at Christmas lights, you can also head to Rochester. Downtown Rochester has an amazing array of lights, and all you have to do is drive there and walk the streets. Christmas joy does not have to be expensive.
And, if you like being outdoors, you could travel to Lake St. Clair for ice fishing. This is something that doesn’t require a lot of traveling or money. Its a great way to enjoy fishing in the cold as well as experience a new side of our lakes. Plus, this activity can be done at any lake that allows it all over the state. You could also go snowmobiling in specific areas nearby. One is the the saints Snowmobile Club up in Saginaw. If you don’t already own one, most people don’t, there are rentals. This allows you to still enjoy the experience without breaking the bank. Now, this activity is definitely outside of metro Detroit, but still worth mentioning. traveling to waterfalls during the winter is a great activity. The waterfalls look gorgeous during the winter and give you a whole new gage of what Michigan looks like. Most notable waterfalls are located in the Upper Peninsula or at the very top of the Lower Peninsula. Tahquamenon Falls State Park is a beautiful place, as I have been there myself, and can be a super fun trip. Although this activity requires quite a bit of planning, traveling, and money, it is worth a second thought.
As you have just read, there are so many different activities and events to keep you busy over winter break and over the winter in general. There activities that are free, mid range, and expensive. There is something for everyone during this season.
