Poverty is a serious issue, not just in our state and country, but in our school as well. According to statistics gathered from MI School Data, out of the 2,723 students enrolled at Dakota High School, 630 of them are economically disadvantaged. That’s 23.14% of our school’s total population. As a result, a charity referred to as “Clothes Closet” was created to help the students in our Dakota Community by providing them with additional layers to keep them warm, especially during the upcoming cold winter months.
It all started when 16 years ago, an amazing staff member named Dr. McPharlin reached out to her family members for their old homecoming and prom dresses to help girls save money during those hectic times. Then, as word spread via email, students and teachers began chipping in by donating their unused jackets, coats, pants, etc.
For the comfort of students, Clothes Closet is not, and will not be heavily advertised. If you notice someone who could benefit from a few extra layers, send them down to room 209. All clothes donated are free of charge and are not required to be returned. If you see something you like and it happens to not be in your size, simply let Dr. McPharlin know, and she will reach out and get your size to you as soon as possible. Here at Dakota High School, we value the students’ wellbeing, health, and safety. These winter months will be cold and unforgiving, like every other, so do not be hesitant to reach out for help when needed. Everyone is welcome!
