Holidays Around the Globe
Although everyone just associates December with Christmas, not everyone celebrates the season. Some countries celebrate Christmas but on a different day. There are some fast and interesting holiday season facts from all over the globe.
Some of the world’s largest and weirdest celebration of holidays occur outside of the United States. In fact, according to Momondo.com, Japan has one of the largest of a “Kentucky Fried Christmas Dinner” in the world. They have a traditional American Christmas with a Kentucky chicken dinner to experience the American foods. The article also describes “The Giant Lantern Festival” in San Fernando – the “Christmas Capital of the Philippines. Visitors from around the world join together to big the largest lanterns the Saturday before Christmas Eve. The house on 22 mile road and Romeo Plank is amazing but is nothing compared to the lanterns in the Philippines handcrafted with at least 5,000 light bulbs each.
Only 160 countries recognize as Christmas to be their most celebrated holiday. However, several of those countries don’t celebrate on December 24th and 25th. Addition days, like Boxing day, was used in the 1800s so workers could have a day off besides because they worked on Christmas day. The workers and servants would come home with a box of presents for their family. As time has changed and the world didn’t need an additional day for the servants and workers but boxing is still observed. Furthermore, some countries such as Angola and Uruguay designate December 25th as Family Day instead of Christmas.
In the map below, Europe is one of the most diverse continents to vary how they say Merry Christmas because of all their languages.
