To those at Dakota who have an interest in writing and giving their works an audience, Dakota’s Inklusive Writing Club is the place for you! The club meets every Wednesday in room 118 (Sarver) after school. Everyone is welcome to the Writing Club regardless of their writing ability. This club strives to welcome any and all creatives at Dakota High School who hope to share their stories and ideas with others and to receive inspiration in a positive and Inklusive environment.
The first club meeting was held on Wednesday, September 13th, but anyone can join on any other Wednesday of the year. During the first meeting, the President (Emily Chavez-Martinez) and Vice President (Cal Gai) of the club introduced themselves in a short PowerPoint. They also explained some of the rules of the club, what the club is about, and they shared the club’s Instagram and Remind information. Then, for the rest of the meeting the students present played Wordle while enjoying some of the snacks that were provided for the first meeting.
Since there weren’t many people present at the club’s first meeting, some individuals may still be unsure about what to expect from the club. Therefore, these are some questions about the club answered by the club’s Vice President, Cal Gai.
What happens in Writing Club?
Cal: In writing club, we write (obviously), but we also share, give feedback, discuss writing and literature, and socialize!
Do students need to be skilled writers to join?
Cal: Absolutely not! anyone can join writing club; our tagline is “inklusive” for a reason! The goal of our club is to give writers a safe space to share their work and meet other writers, as well as introduce new people to the world of writing!
Do students HAVE to write during meetings?
Cal: You don’t HAVE to write at the meetings, nor do you HAVE to share. At writing club, we’re all about being respectful of each other. If you don’t want to write or share, that’s totally fine.
Do students have to attend every meeting?
Cal: You don’t have to join every meeting! The requirements for a chord at graduation is 70% attendance or higher, but that’s the closest there is to any requirements on how often you show up. And that’s only a requirement for seniors who are interested in getting a chord, so if that’s not your thing, then no worries!
Is there anything else you would like readers to know about Writing Club?
Cal: We try to make writing club as casual and relaxing as possible! We don’t want anyone to feel forced to share their writing or write in a specific way. We want to be as inclusive as possible. We want you to have a comfortable and enjoyable experience with us! Writing is a beautiful way to express yourself, and we want to spread the joy of it to our school.
Here are some statements that newcomers of the club have to say after attending the first Writing Club meeting.
“So far, so good! I’m really excited this year to challenge my writing skills!” -Anonymous student
“I enjoy the vibe! Seems like it will be a very good year!”-Jazmine Travis
