Scream 6 Movie Review

!Contains some spoilers!

A new version of the classic Scream 6 movie is now out in theatres. With the characters we love returning from old and new versions. It became the longest running movie times in the Scream franchise with a record of 2 hours and 2 minutes beating the previous record held by Scream 2. Scream 6 is about the four survivors of the Ghostface murders move out of Woodsboro to have a fresh start in New York City. But soon enough they find themselves fighting for their lives when a new Ghostface goes on a new rampage not too long after the last Ghostface made an appearance. This scream movie to me is much more interesting and thrilling than the last few that have been released. It also is the first time ever there was three Ghostface killers revealed. Being released in March and not around Halloween time was surprising but it still was interesting to watch despite the season.

The movie starts with the life of the survivors after their encounter with Ghostface. They are in New York City going to college, but still terrified for their lives following their traumatizing events. The new setting being in New York City creates more tense and thrills because it’s such a good location for a movie like this to take place. While it sticks to its original roots, it was remodeled to work in the modern world. Having this setting was perfect, a masked killer running the streets of New York City was a perfect way to capture this movie in our modern day. The “core four” as they call themselves, have a way closer bond following the last movie. The sister bond between Sam and Tara is shown a lot more than the previous movie now that Sam is back in Taras’s life. Courtney Cox also returns in the movie as Gale Weathers. When the movie starts to pick up with the killings starting, it is very hard to tell in this movie which ones are the killers. You have three new people added to the friend group and also a love interest for Sam. Throughout the movie it is usually easier to tell who it is but in Scream 6 it was very difficult. With new characters added to the story it makes you question them but also the survivors because you never know what could happen in the Scream movies. The killings were very detailed and had more gore. It was way more in depth with the killings than previous movies.

One thing I love about this Scream was that I feel like the characters are so realistic to teens now. The dialogue is much like how teens today talk and act. Jenna Ortega does an amazing job at playing the role of Tara. She is a great person for this role and her character is very relatable throughout the movie. One of my favorite characters also was Mindy, played by Jasmin Savoy Brown, turned out to be one of the most comedic and interesting characters to me because of her knowledge of scary movies. In the movie, she is the scary and thriller movie obsessed and portrays the role wonderfully, just like the smart character Randy Meeks. in the first Scream movie. From when she was stabbed to normal conversations, she reacts like how a teen would realistically. I really enjoyed her character more than the last movie. I also loved how the friends stuck together so much throughout the movie and worked with each other instead of accusing each other of being Ghostface.

One thing I did over the weekend was watch all the Scream movies in order, and from what I watched, I would make Scream 6 one of the top movies of the series. A lot of them were not as entertaining as this one but weren’t bad either. If I were to rank the movies I would go:

  1. Scream 1
  2. Scream 6
  3. Scream 4
  4. Scream 5
  5. Scream 2
  6. Scream 3

Usually when older movies keep making new adaptations of that same movie people start to not enjoy them. But with the Scream movies they stayed consistently good and interesting. They reuse a lot of moments in each movies, but they feel new every time it happens. For example, when in the beginning of the movies they get the call from Ghostface and they say, “What’s your favorite scary movie?” It’s a classic and so many other scenes are brought back to life in the new movies in this series.

I would rate this movie overall a nice 8/10
