Why Are Blobfish So Ugly?

In 2013, psychrolutes marcidus, or the blobfish was voted the world’s ugliest animal by an online poll becoming the new mascot of the Ugly Animal Preservation Society. What people don’t understand about these slimy sacks of water is that: the only reason they look so hideous is because of the extreme change in pressure from the deep sea. That’s why most pictures of them are their dead, bloated carcasses.

The blobfish looks very normal when in its usual high-pressure environment, for the extreme climate keeps the blobfish’s gelatinous body together.

Very little is known about the blobfish.

They are simple, slow little fish who happen to be misunderstood so greatly by humans. Scientists don’t put much research into them; we don’t know if they’re even endangered or not because of how few sightings of them there have been.

Poor sad blobfish but maybe it’s better that we know so little about them and their mysterious, goopy lifestyles. Maybe it’s better for humans to just let them be.
