SOS review
Five and a half years after SZA dropped her first studio album Ctrl, her second album SOS was dropped on December 9th, 2022. The album was one of the most anticipated R&B albums when it was expected to drop, and it didn’t disappoint. The album includes 23 tracks with features from Travis Scott to Phoebe Bridgers. The total run time for the album is 68 minutes.
Here are my personal ratings on each of the songs.
1. SOS- 7/10
“SOS” is the opening song to the album. It was a great intro that set high standards for the rest of the album.
2. Kill Bill- 9/10
“Kill Bill” is probably the most popular song on the album and for good reason. It’s one of the catchiest songs on the album. The song references the movie “Kill Bill” a film by Quinten Tarantino.
3. Seek & Destroy- 9/10
“Seek & Destroy” is one of my favorite tracks on the album. The song encapsulates what she feels like to have messed things up but now having a freeing feeling.
4. Low- 10/10
“Low” was one of the songs that I didn’t expect. The beat is catchy, and the songs flow is unmatched. Travis Scott makes a bit of an appearance leading us to believe that he is going to be featured but he doesn’t get fully featured until a few tracks down.
5. Love Language- 7/10
“Love Language” is more of a mid-tempo song but still very R&B. “Love Language” is SZA wanting to understand her partner’s love language to strengthen the relationship.
6. Blind- 6/10
The start of “Blind” is one of my favorite parts of the whole song. The song is slower overall but keeps a good rhythm to keep the listener engaged.
7. Used (feat. Don Toliver)- 7/10
“Used” is the first song on the album that has a feature. SZA posted a snippet of this track before the album came out and people have been waiting for it to be released for a long time. Don Toliver’s part on the song really adds to it and makes it a great song on the album.
8. Snooze- 8/10
“Snooze” is about wanting to be in the moment with your partner. “How could I snooze and miss the moment? You just too important” is one of the lines on the song showing how much it matters to be in the moment and enjoy the time you’re given with a person.
9. Notice Me- 7/10
“Notice Me” is more of a fast-paced song with a very catchy beat. SZA explains that instead of being their girlfriend she just wants to be the person that loves them.
10. Gone Girl- 10/10
“Gone Girl” is my personal favorite track on the whole album. The song is about losing the girl. The girl is gone, and you must pay the consequences for your actions. “Squeezin’ too tight, boy, you’re losing me”
11. Smoking on my Ex Pack- 4/10
I’d say that “Smoking on my Ex Pack” is considered more of an interlude because it’s only a minute and 23 seconds long. The song was alright but there are better tracks on the album.
12. Ghost in the Machine (feat. Phoebe Bridgers)- 9/10
“Ghost in the Machine” features Phoebe Bridgers and is a great track on the album. The track is powerful especially with Phoebe’s feature. Her feature adds something that I didn’t expect when I was listening.
13. F2F- 7/10
“F2F” is more of a pop song rather than an R&B song. Some people love it while others don’t believe it should be on the album at all. Having the song on the album might be a little different but she does the song well and it’s enjoyable.
14. Nobody Gets Me- 6/10
“Nobody gets me” is about exactly what the title says. The song is one of the slower ones and pulls the heart strings when you really listen to the lyrics.
15. Conceited- 5/10
“Conceited” is one of the songs that’s good but not one of my favorites.
16. Special- 6/10
“Special” is about who SZA wants to be. You can see the resemblances between her first album Ctrl and this track.
17. Too Late- 7/10
“Too Late” is one of the catchiest songs on the entire album. The rapid beat flows through the whole song making it easy to get caught in.
18. Far- 9/10
“Far” deals with losing herself and having to find herself again. The song is underrated compared to others on the album and all SZA was doing was spitting facts with the lyrics.
19. Shirt- 7/10
“Shirt” was a previously released single that dropped on October 28th. The song is very catchy and got a lot of people’s attention even before it was dropped. It got popular on TikTok when a snippet of the song was posted on SZA’s Instagram story.
20. Open Arms (feat. Travis Scott)- 8/10
“Open Arms” was one of the most anticipated tracks on the album because of the feature with Travis Scott. The song was slower than I expected it to be with Travis on it, but it didn’t disappoint.
21. I Hate U- 6/10
“I Hate U” was previously released in 2021 and gained a lot of popularity. The song is good but overrated and there are better songs on the album.
22. Good Days- 9/10
“Good Days” came out in 2020 prior to the album dropping almost 2 years later. The song became very popular when it was released and remains one of her most popular songs.
23. Forgiveless- 8/10
“Forgiveless” is the closing track on the album, and she speaks about people talking behind her back. The song sampled Bjork and featured Dirty Ol’ Bas***d.
Overall, the album lived up to all the anticipation that it received. I believe this album will go down to be one of the best female R&B albums of all time. I’d rate this album in all a 9/10. There were no bad songs and many great songs. This album is a must listen all the way through.
