Why You Should Watch Netflix’s Heartstopper

The graphic novel series written by Alice Oseman was adapted into a Netflix show starring Kit Conner as Nick Nelson and Joe Locke as Charlie Spring

Why You Should Watch Netflix's Heartstopper
  1. It’s not just about being gay, it’s about finding your sexuality and coming to terms with it. The representation of multiple sexualities is absolutely astounding. Most shows only cover being strictly gay/lesbian, but Heartstopper covers being bisexual and transgender as well. It’s also about the struggle of coming out and the unfortunate homophobia in high schools.

2. Not only does it cover multiple sexualities, but the actors playing the respectable characters are actually part of the LGBTQ. The trans character named Elle is played by a trans woman named Yazmin Finney, and the main character, Charlie, is played by Joe Locke who is gay in real life.

3. Usually in high school shows, the actors playing the high schoolers are in their 20’s. In Heartstopper, however, the actors are all still teenagers playing teenagers. The way it should be.

4. (TW) It has accurate representations of mental health. If you’ve read the comics, it’s no surprise that Charlie deals with an eating disorder throughout the 4 books. Even though the series only covered books one and two, it already began to show the signs of his ED that the series goes over in books 3 and four. If/when it is renewed for season 2, there’s no doubt it’ll go into depth about it and truly show viewers that they’re not struggling alone, and how they can get the help they need.

5. The soundtrack is so good. Girl in Red literally started playing during a scene with Darcy and Tara, the lesbians in the show. Overall, the show features queer underground artists and some banger songs.

6. It’s a perfect match to the comics. Not only is the casting a perfect match to the comic characters, but the show also has lines that are pulled directly from the comics, and the storyline is pretty much the exact same save for a few changes. However, these changes are excused because Alice Oseman herself wrote the script and the changes were her own idea.

7. It’s adorable and binge worthy. The 8 episodes are only around 30 minutes long, and the storyline is captivating and wholesome. There were parts where it had me screaming and crying on my floor at 2am. Between the characters and the “your mom” jokes, it’s just SO GOOD. Also Nick Nelson????????????????

This is a show about queer characters by queer actors for queer people written by a queer person. It is exactly what we needed, and it’s 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes proves that. Please watch it.
