The Guys
They don’t know
That we have to keep our blinds closed
That there might be someone peeking through our window
The guys, they don’t know
They don’t know our lives
How we walk to our cars with pepper spray, lipstick tasers and pocketknives
How our protection depends on how hard we try
The guys, they don’t know our lives
They don’t know our pain
that we are judged for how we dress every day
we can’t just give out our names
That it’s slowly driving us all insane
The guys, they don’t know our pain
They don’t know our rage
How we only see “bad” and “dangerous” in every place
How we always remember a face, just in case
How we can recall license plates
The guys, they don’t know our rage
They don’t know our boundaries
That we don’t in fact like cat calling or feeling random hands around our bodies
That we’ve grown fond of the word “no” so we make it back to our families
The guys, they don’t know our boundaries
They don’t know our exhaustion
How we hate the amount of effort and precautions
How we look behind us every so often
The guys, they don’t know our exhaustion
And They don’t know our drive
That we want to change the course of our lives
That we will not just stand by
That we will make rules created by society crumble up and die
The guys, they don’t know our drive
And they don’t know our strength
How we pick each other back up in every way
How we collectively hate this place
How we share our pain
The guys, they don’t know our strength
And they don’t know our mind
That we refuse to stay “blind”
That we will change everything wrong that we find
The guys, they don’t know our mind
And they don’t know our truth
How women have nothing to lose
How we only ever feel used
How we suffer and go through so much abuse
The guys, they don’t know our truth
And they don’t know our power
That we are more than delicate flowers
That we will never call ourselves cowards
And that we strive to empower.
