Things Not To Say To Middle Easterners

1. “Are you from Muslim/Islam?”

Islam is a religion, the people who participate in this religion are known as Muslims. People who are Muslim also do not have to be Middle Eastern; they can be Ethiopian, Iraqi, German, Irish, Korean, Brazilian, it does not matter.

2.   “Do you have your own camel back home?”

No. We have cars. The Middle East is at the same if not a more advanced level technologically than America.

3.    “So…do you live in a sandcastle?”

No sweetie. We live in houses, apartments, and villas.

4. “The aliens built the pyramids, not the Ancient Egyptians.”

So everything that America can’t do is done by aliens? No. All ancient groups were much more advanced and intelligent than we are today; not technologically but rather as a whole (they’re just smarter).

5. “YOU ARABS ARE TERRORISTS”

Umm…ever heard of the KKK?

6.”[ay-rabs]”

It’s [air-rubs] you sound ignorant.

7.”Aren’t you Arabic?”

Arabic is the language that is primarily spoken in the Middle Easterners. No, we aren’t a language.

8. “All Middle Eastern women are oppressed”

Some are, but this is a worldwide issue, not a Middle Eastern issue. Most M.E. women are treated like queens.

9. “Are you from Arabia?”

Arabia is another name for Saudi Arabia (I’m sure you didn’t know that). That is a country in the Middle East but it isn’t where we’re all from.

10. *Someone tells you they are Chaldean* “So are you from Chaldea?”

Chaldean is an ethnic group within Iraq, it is not a place.
